Obituary
Noank - Kenneth L. Barbour, age 71, of 17 Sachem Road, Noank, passed away Tuesday evening, May 30, 2006 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Groton.
Kenneth was born in Far Hills, N.J., on July 19, 1934, the son of Kenneth S. and Daisy Stiles Barbour.
He married Ellen Patrick on Oct. 13, 1956 in Basking Ridge, N.J.
Ken graduated from Bernards High School in Bernardsville, N.J., in the class of 1952. He earned an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J., in 1956 and a master's of science degree from University of Connecticut in 1966.
He had worked as a chief engineer at Electric Boat Company in Groton from 1963 until retiring Aug. 1, 1992 as a principal engineer. Previous to Electric Boat he had worked for Union Carbide Plastics Co. of Bound Brook, N.J., and as a consulting engineer for Horace M. Patrick.
He was a 32 year member and full certificate holder of the United States Power Squadrons and served as Rear Commander of the Offshore Navigation Committee. He also was a member and Rear Commodore of the Shennecossett Yacht Club. He traveled extensively in his motor home and was a member of the Seaport Sams Club. Ken was a camping and sailing enthusiast and had been active with the Boy Scouts of America as a Scout Master, an Institutional Representative and as a Silver Beaver recipient.
Besides his wife he is survived by a son, Kenneth P. Barbour and his wife, Andrea, of Norwich; two daughters, Lynn Getty and her husband, Don, of Quaker Hill, and Judy Williams and her husband, Chris, of Westerly, R.I.; a sister, Eleanor Bennett, of Clarksville, Va.; and eight grandchildren.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday at 11 o'clock at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, Fort Hill Road, Groton. Visiting hours will be on Friday from 5 until 8 o'clock at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. Interment will be in Bedminster Reformed Church Cemetery, Bedminster, N.J., on Monday.
