- Roy was born on the family farm in Tabusintac, NB, the fifth of nine children of Myrtle (McCallum) and Michael Robertson. He grew up in New Brunswick and at the age of 17 joined the armed forces, served as a tank driver in the Second World War. The war took Roy to many places including North Africa, Italy and to Holland for that country's liberation. After the war Roy worked building docks in Newfoundland and the Queen Charlotte Islands. Freda Kidd was a friend of Roy's sister Rhoda when they met in 1955. On June 28, 1956 the two were married in Shelbourne, Ontario. Roy and Freda started their married life in Toronto. After six months they moved to North Bay. Roy worked as a carpenter, self-employed contractor and a steam fitter retiring in 1986.
