Obituary
ORRINGTON and BREWER - Bertha June (Strang) Farley, 90, passed away peacefully Jan. 6, 2009, at a Bangor health care facility, after a battle with cancer. She was born June 3, 1918, in Brewer, the daughter of Mabel (Robertson) Strang and James Strang. Her maternal grandparents were Jane (Price) Robertson and John Robertson and paternal grandparents were Hannah (Price) Strang and Nelson Strang. Her parents both came to Brewer in the late 1800s from a small town, Tabinsuntac, in Northern New Brunswick, Canada. She graduated from Brewer High School in 1935. Bertha and her late husband, Merton Wesley Farley, had been residents of Orrington for 53 years before moving to the Ellen Leach Memorial Home, Brewer, in 2003. They had been married 67 years when Merton died in 2004. After raising her large family of seven children, Bertha worked for 15 years at Westgate Nursing Home, Bangor. As a child of the depression years, she always maintained a practical, frugal and philosophical approach to life. Her ever-growing family always came first and she dearly loved all of her 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. As the last surviving member of her family, throughout the years she had been the source of family anecdotes, oral histories and genealogical information regarding the Strang, Price and Robertson families of Patten Court, South Brewer and Tabinsuntac, New Brunswick. Bertha was as happy relating a story of an event that occurred in 1924 as she was in sharing her opinion of a current subject. Bertha is survived by two daughters, Judith and her husband, William Barry Fraser, of Orrington, three grandchildren, Scott Fraser, Dawn Cowan and Amy Birch; and Elizabeth and her husband, John Clifford, of Lewiston, two grandsons, John and Nathan Clifford; and five sons, Merton "Bud" Farley of Bar Harbor, grandson, Christopher Farley; David Farley and his wife, Patricia Wood Farley, of Chocorua, N.H., three grandsons, Jeffery, Jason and Jared Farley; Richard and his wife, Connie Anderson Farley, of Milton, Fla., three grandchildren, Kimberly Whitman, David Farley and Denise Courtemanche; Jon and his wife, Kim Leighton Farley, of Hampden, two grandchildren, Oriana and Evan Farley; and Mark and his wife, Susan Gillis Farley, of Brewer, two grandchildren, Alayna and Steven Farley. She is also survived by 21 great-grandchildren, Mason, George, Eleanor, Nicholas, Teresa, Mar-garet, Alexandra, Samantha, Megan, Emily, Brianne, Rebecca, Kara, Sydney, Madison, Ryan, Daniel, Adam, Bryson, Ellen and Lauren. She was predeceased by 10 brothers and sisters, Elizabeth, Hannah, Seretta, Jane, Maude, Florence, Leslie, Truman, James and Norman; and by daughter-in-law, Carol Shell Farley. Bertha will be greatly missed by her family and friends. The family thanks the wonderful staff of Ross Manor for their professional care and many kindnesses. They are also grateful to the staff, residents and Bertha's many friends at the Ellen Leach Memorial Home. Family and friends may visit 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 69 State St., Brewer. Graveside services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that memorial contributions be sent to Friends of Brewer Schools, P.O. Box 455, Brewer, ME 04412. Condolences may be offered at www.kileyandfoley.com.
