Excerpt from newspaper article by Kenneth Kidd::
...
As it did for tens of thousands of young men like Albert, World War II offered a kind of relief. Albert enlisted with the Cape Breton Highlanders — Gaelic motto: Siol Na Fear Fearail (Breed of manly men).
He’d spend more than two years fighting in Italy, most often as one of the guys moving artillery closer to the enemy in the dead of night, ahead of the next day’s infantry assault. Twice his truck was blown up by enemy fire.
Not that there was much glory in any of this, since a cruel twist of history ended up dubbing those who’d fought in Italy — long before the Allied invasion of France — the “D-Day Dodgers.”
The Cape Bretoners were eventually shipped to Holland, which Albert mostly regards now as a kind of sad, pointless denouement, lives needlessly shed until the bitter end. His regiment’s last battle was taking the Dutch port of Delfzijl, with 19 killed, 54 wounded and 1,700 enemy prisoners captured. A week later, the war was over.
“I wasn’t smart, I wasn’t brave,” Albert says of his soldiering days. “I was just lucky.”

Frederick(Fred) Burke Roberts
Frederick(Fred) Burke Roberts, 78, of Amherst; born in Sackville, N.B.; passed away peacefully at Cumberland Regional Health Care Center, on Friday,October 5, 2018. Born in Sackville, N.B. he was the son of the late Leonard and Margaret (Burke) Roberts. Fred and his siblings lived in approximately 18 different houses in and around Joggins and River Hebert in as many years, preceding his move to Toronto in 1965, for 35 years. Fred enjoyed his time as a trained radio television repair and test technician for Admiral Television in Port Credit. He then moved on to DeHavilland Aircraft (later Bombardier) working as a testshop avionics and wiring inspector. He never lost his love of taking things apart and rebuilding them. His career path and job choices were determined by the benefits his children would be entitled to. He will be sadly missed by his son Terry and his loyal bobtail tuxedo cat (and best friend) Lucky in Amherst; and is also survived by his twin sons Frederick and Patrick of River Hebert; his sister Marjorie Ferguson of Moncton and Philip Roberts of Albert County as well as many nephews, nieces and close cousins. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Paul, Emmerson, Edmund, Billy, Douglas, and Gerald, and sisters Maryanne and Betty. At his request, his body was donated to the Dalhousie Human Body Donation Program to assist medical students in training. Interment of his ashes will be at his mother's grave at a later date. No funeral service will be held. In times where events and drama weighed him down, he never became bitter, but he wondered why people could be so cruel. A fitting last request is that each of those who cared for him commit a simple act of kindness for someone that matters. Special thanks to Amy, Kim and Dr. Short in Palliative Care, The VON (Toni), as well as the dedicated RNs, LPNs and CCAs and staff at the hospital who aided him in his final 3 months.

Obituary
Phillip ”Phil” Roberts
1950 – 2021
We are saddened to announce the passing of Phillip "Phil" Roberts on Monday, November 15, 2021 at The Moncton Hospital. He was born in River Hebert, NS to the late Lenard Roberts and Margeret Burke.
Phil did a little bit of everything during his career but loved working on small engines most of all. He could tinker with any kind of old machinery until he got it going again and considered himself to be a jack-of-all-trades. His skills even extended to newer items like keyboards and computers. He loved his little piece of land, telling stories, and enjoyed a simple life. He was always good to his friends and would help with anything that was asked of him, but he was stubborn and always had to be right. Besides his parents, Phil is predeceased by a daughter who died at birth. He is survived by a daughter Tammy, son Cody, sister Marjorie Ferguson, grandchildren Keethan and Braxton, nephew Robert "Bob", and will be missed most of all by his friend and neighbor Carl Murray, friend Renee (Maskery) Comfort, and his lifelong friend Kenny Comfort.
Respecting his wishes, cremation has taken place at Cobb’s Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 330 Whitepine Road in Riverview (869-2007). In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of the donor’s choice may be made in his memory.
