    Obituary

    Doris L. Tursi June 26, 1915 - March 06, 2005

Doris Anderson Tursi, 89, of Anacortes, died Sunday, March 6, 2005 at the Fidalgo Care Center in Anacortes, Washington. Born June 26, 1915 to Stanley and Gladys (Fisher) Anderson, she was a life-long resident of this community, which she loved and served all her years. Doris graduated from Anacortes High School in 1934 and immediately interned to become a beautician at the local Kulshan Beauty Shop, which she purchased in 1936. She later operated Doris’ Beauty Shop out of her home on N Avenue and later out of her home on Highway 20 until 1977. On July 11, 1936 Doris married John Tursi and they would have celebrated their sixty-ninth wedding anniversary this coming summer. Over the years, Doris served as president for the Eagles Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary, and the Anacortes Historical Museum. Doris was one of the founders of the Soroptimist Thrift Shop and served as their president. She worked for this organization even after she became legally blind several years ago and continued to work there within five weeks of her passing. In addition, she was a member of the Anacortes School Superintendent’s Advisory Council and served as president and board member of the Skagit County Historical Society. In 1968 Doris and John began their world travels, which took them into 65 countries in Europe, Asia, and North Africa. These trips afforded them many exciting adventures, which they shared with local schools, senior centers, and community clubs via their slide shows and lectures. In 1978 Doris and John were among the first Americans allowed to tour China through a trip that originated in Yugoslavia. The couple was so fascinated with Chinese history and culture that they returned to China two more times. They were honored by the Siberia-Russia Explorers Club for having flown the first commercial route to pass directly over the North Pole, thus flying around the world twice. Friends and family remember Doris for her cheerfulness and positive outlook on life. She was an excellent gardener, known especially for her wonderful begonias. Doris cared deeply and well for her dogs and cats, in addition to the wild creatures that came to her home on their wooded acreage. But most of all, Doris cared for and served the people of her community. Doris is preceded in death by her parents, and her sister, Phyllis. She is survived by her husband, John; brother, Commander Frank Anderson, USCG Retired; one niece; and three nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Skagit County, the Salvations Army Food Bank, or a charity of choice. A memorial service will be conducted by the Soroptimists at the Anacortes Senior Center on Saturday, March 12, 2005 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Anacortes.
