    Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Harris, of Charlottetown, passed quietly from this earthly world at 11:20 in the morning of Monday, March 4, 2013, at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown.
This gentle and courtly woman will be greatly missed by a circle of intimate friends and family who loved and admired her calm demeanor and kindly spirit.
Mary Beth, as she was known, was born in 1932, the only child of architect James Edward Harris and Freda (Haszard), who pre-deceased her. She attended West Kent School in Charlottetown, and then the Edgehill School for Girls in Windsor, Nova Scotia; before obtaining her Bachelor of Arts (English) degree at King's College University, where she was selected as Senior Co Ed. Mary Beth continued her education, studying Library Sciences at the University of Toronto; and then took up employment in the Halifax Memorial Library.
She returned to Prince Edward Island in 1967 to become Head of Library Information Services at the University of Prince Edward Island, a position she held until her retirement from the university in 1992.
Mary Beth held a lifelong devotion to books and reading; and after her retirement, became a fancier of a breed of small and wooly dogs known as Tibetan Terriers, to whom she referred as her "family". She gave them whimsical names - Sarah, Buckwheat, and the like, and loved them dearly. Giving them up to good families when she no longer could look after their needs was a painful experience in her life.
In 2008 she became a resident of Park West Lodge, her home for the remainder of her life: well-liked and respected by the other members of her new family at the lodge.
Mary Beth was a proud Prince Edward Islander, respectful of her family heritage which included the artist Robert Harris; and a lifetime member of the congregation of St. Peter's Cathedral.
Arrangements entrusted to MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel. Visitation at All Souls Chapel, St. Peter's Cathedral on Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. for family and friends. Funeral service Friday from St. Peter's Cathedral at 10 a.m. Interment in St. Peter's Anglican Cemetery. A reception will follow at Park West Lodge.
