BIGELOW, Nathaniel Harvey - 78, Elgin Street, Springhill, passed away on
Tuesday, September 6, 2005, at his residence. Born in Springhill, he was a son
of the late John and Mary Elizabeth (Boyce) Bigelow. Most of his working years
were spent in coal mining and the fishing industry. He enjoyed hunting, fishing
and socializing. He is survived by his brother, William "Bill" (Joan) Bigelow,
Charlottetown, P.E.I.; three nieces and two nephews. He was predeceased by
sister, Colleen. Visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. Monday, September 12,
followed immediately at 2 p.m. by a memorial funeral service with Rev. Perry
Hanley officiating, both held in A.H. Brown Funeral Home, Springhill. Burial in
Rodney Cemetery, Cumberland County.

KIRKPATRICK (Bigelow), Mary Colleen - 73, Meech Avenue, North Sydney, passed away Friday, July 23, 2004, in Northside General Hospital, North Sydney. Born in Springhill, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary (Boyce) Bigelow. Following completion of her high school education, she studied nursing at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, graduated in 1954 and then came to North Sydney with her husband, Dr. Hugh Kirkpatrick. She is survived by her son, Dr. John (Debra), North Sydney; daughters, Susan (Dr. Graham) Opie, North Sydney; Dr. Jane (Dr. Michael) Gillis, Halifax; brothers, William (Joan) Bigelow, Charlottetown; Nathaniel, Springhill; grandchildren, Logan, Lesley and Michael Kirkpatrick, Esther, Sarah and Kirk Opie, Anna, Madeline and Elsie Gillis; sister-in-law, Esther (Dr. Harry) Poulos, Dartmouth; a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Hugh Kirkpatrick. Colleen was a devoted wife, mother and protector. She enjoyed her summers with family and friends in Georges River and winters skiing in Ingonish. She had a great sense of humour and enjoyed the wit of others. The challenge of Colleen's lengthy illness was made easier to endure through the kindness and dedication of her wonderful caregivers. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday in W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will take place 11 a.m. Tuesday in Calvary Baptist Church, North Sydney, Rev. John Hannem officiating. Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Northside Hospital Foundation or Calvary Baptist Church, North Sydney.

Helen Amelia Henwood 71 years of Lisgar Street, Springhill, passed away on Thursday, March 25, 2010 in All Saints Hospital, Springhill. Born in Springhill, she was a daughter of the Late Harold and Catherine (Harroun) Boyce. Helen was a member of the Springhill Baptist Church and the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She was an avid dart player, winning several championships; enjoyed playing 45's, Yatzee and washer toss, tole painting and especially being with her family and friends and spending time at the beach. She will be sadly missed by her husband, Ralph; their children, Ernel (Sandra) Henwood, Westville, Bob (Kim) Henwood and Jamie (Heather) Henwood both of Springhill, Catherine (Robert) Parsons, Brookfield and Diana (Eddie) Pettigrew, Springhill; Helen's daughter, Bonnie Lee (Brian) MacDonald, Springhill; several grand and great grandchildren; brothers, Jack, Donald (Elsie Peterson), Robert, all of Springhill and Harold (Lillian) of Sydney, Cape Breton; sister, Linda (Ben) Thompson, South Brook; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters, Joyce, Patsy and Diana and an infant sister, Nancy. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to A. H. Diana L. Matthews 1946-2010
Diana Leta Matthews, 63 years of age, of Junction Rd. Springhill, NS, passed away at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Center on March 21, 2010. Born in Springhill, she was a daughter of the late Harold and Catherine (Harroun) Boyce. Diana worked in the restaurant service business for years, as well as hair dressing and ceramics. She was an avid gardener and was a yard saler extraordinaire, also past president of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 17 Auxiliary. Diana will be sadly missed by her husband Darrell Matthews of Springhill; one son, James Darrel and one daughter Tara Lynn Matthews, both at home; granddaughter Christiane Leta Trim; four brothers, Jack, Donald (Elsie Peterson), Robert Boyce, all of Springhill, and Harold (Lillian) Boyce of Sydney, C.B.; three sisters, Helen (Ralph) Henwood of Springhill, Linda (Ben) Thompson of South Brook and Bonnie (Brian) MacDonald of Springhill, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters, Joyce and Patsy, as well as a sister Nancy in infancy. Arrangments have been entrusted to AH Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill (597-2361). It is with broken hearts that we regret to announce the passing of our dear and special husband, father, son, brother, son-in-law, uncle and great friend, James Edward Boyce, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. James passed away on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, at the An Cala Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving wife, Lori and family. Born in Springhill, N.S., he was the son of Mr. Harold Boyce, Sydney and the late Lillian (Strickland) Boyce. Besides his father, James is survived by his wife, Lori Riles; his children, Elaine Boyce (Brendan), Daniel Boyce, Christopher (Liz), Mark and Kurtis Carter; his siblings, Colette (Zal) Jackson, Cathy Boyce (John), Robert, Dennis (Gail), John (Janet), Harold (Joan). He is also survived by his mother and father-in-law, Mildred and Angus Riles, Louisbourg; brothers-in-law, Kenny (Deb) Riles, Terry (Colleen) Riles; his special playmate and niece, Julia, as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Born in Springhill, he was a son of the late Robert Allan and Joyce Marie (Boyce) Perrin. He was a past member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 17, Springhill. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Surviving are his wife, Veronica Dowe; son, Kevin Troy, Parrsboro; Robert Allan, Moncton, N.B.; brother, Garry, North Delta, B.C.; sisters, Deborah (Mrs. James Gallagher), Brenda (Mrs. Weldon Smith), East Mapleton, Cumberland Co.; three grandsons; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. GALLAGHER, Deborah Catherine "Debbie" - 57, Lynn Road, Cumberland Co., passed away on Thursday, March 24, 2005, in Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Nappan, Cumberland Co. Born in Springhill, she was a daughter of the late Robert Allan and Joyce Marie (Boyce) Perrin. Debbie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and a special sister. She enjoyed doing crafts and spending time with her family and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, James Gallagher; son, Gerald (Heather) Gallagher, Mapleton; daughters, Gloria (Danny) Gallagher and Glenda (Veryle) Lewis, both of Lynn Road; grandchildren, Emma, Chloe, James, and Brooke; sister, Brenda (Weldon) Smith, Lynn Road; Gary (Peggy) Perrin, Vancouver, B.C.; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by son, Ronnie; brother, Gerald "Jake" Perrin, and in infant sister, Nancy. Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in A.H. Brown Funeral Home, Springhill, where the funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 26, with Rev. Bob Mack officiating. Burial in Mapleton Cemetery at a later date.
