The first Sumner store was set up on Main Street at Duke, where most of the action then was, and on May 23, 1855, The Westmorland Times ran this advertisement: "W.H.T. Sumner, corner of Main and Duke Streets, having received, in addition to the former large stock, a new and fresh list of Goods per 'Seaman' from Boston and 'Ellen' from St. John, now offers the same to the public at a small advance on the cost. The Stock comprises - Flour, meal, bread, pork, hams, beef, beans, rice, lard, split peas, Groceries of all kinds. An extensive lot of Staple Dry Goods. The largest stock of Hardware and Carpenters' Tools to be found in this vicinity.
