AMHERST - Mrs. Mary E. (Betty) Smith, 44, wife of Edsel M. Smith, of Amherst and formerly of Shinimicas, died Friday in the Halifax Infirmary. Â Born in Amherst, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Fields. Â Besides her husband, she is survived by one son, Darrlye, at home; one sister, Doris (Mrs. Victor Patterson), Bowmanville, Ont.; two brothers, Lewis, Oshawa, Ont.; Charles, Amherst; one half brother, Gordon Brown, Newcastle, Ont. Â The body is at Furlong's Funeral Home, Amherst, where funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. H.G. Mackenzie officiating. Â Burial will be in Shinimicas cemetery.

BEATON, Doris Louisa - 72, died July 31, 2000, in Lorneville. Born in Amherst, she was a daughter of the late Ethel (Brown) and Lewis Fields. She was a Red Cross Homemaker. Her time was for her family and the Lorneville United Church. She lived in Ontario for 30 years and retired to Lorneville. Surviving are daughter, Sandra Fallow, Oshawa; sons, Lewis Patterson, Eric Patterson, Oshawa; six grandchildren;two great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Ross Beaton; brothers, Charles, Lewis; sister, Betty Smith. Visitation 2-4,7-9 p.m. Thursday, in Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst. Funeral 11 a.m. Friday, in Lorneville United Church, Rev. Allan Griffin officiating. Burial in Lorneville Cemetery. Donations to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or to Canadian Diabetes Association.

FIELDS, Charles William J. - 57, of 15 York St., Amherst, died Sunday at home. Â Born in Amherst, he was a son of the late Lou and Ethel Fields. Â He was a former employee of the N.S. Power Corporation and the Enterprise Foundry. Â Several years ago he purchased the Hanwright Foundry in Amherst, now known as Central Casting Ltd. Â He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Â He is survived by his wife, the former Mrs. Patricia (Pat) Helpard, a daughter, Debbie (Mrs. Danny Martin), Springhill; six step-granddaughters, Kelly (Mrs. George Douglas), Shelly Rushton and Kimberly Rushton, all of Amherst; Sandra (Mrs. Darren Ibbitson), Fort Lawrence; Belinda and Karen, at home; a sister, Doris Patterson, Lorneville; a brother, Lou, Whitby, Ont.; his stepfather, Joseph Brown, Ontario; and four grandchildren. Â He was predeceased by a sister, Betty Smith. Â Funeral service will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, David Bradley officiating. Â Burial will be in the Amherst Cemetery. Â The family will receive friends at their home. Â In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
