    Lilian Chapman
    1915-2008

Chapman, Lilian Maude – 93, Dartmouth. It is with deep sadness but enduring fondness we announce the sudden passing of our mother Lilian on July 12th while at her cottage in Tidnish. Daughter of the late Benjamin and Maude Atkinson, she is survived by her 4 children: Jacqueline (Frank Gallagher) of Winnipeg, Joan (Robert MacInnis) of Riverview, Katherine of Dartmouth and Paul (Michele) of St. Margaret’s Bay; her sister Rachel Boland and nephew Ian Maclean (Marjorie). She is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Kevin Gallagher, Trevor (Corynne), Robert and Bradley MacInnis, Jessica, Stefanie, Shannon and Rachel Chapman, great granddaughter Breanne Gallagher and several other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years Jack Gordon and her sister Alma Maclean.

Lilian attended Mount Allison Ladies College, where her mother had been the first woman to graduate with a Masters Degree in Mathematics, in 1901. Lilian’s daughter and granddaughter carried on the family tradition, also graduating from Mount Allison, 35 years apart.

For many years, Lil enjoyed winter afternoons with her Dartmouth bridge pals. But for the last 59 summers, her favourite times have been spent at her cottage on the Northumberland Strait, surrounded by family, friends and fellow members of the Rinkydinks.

Her loves were her family, her piano, playing bridge and gardening and she enjoyed all right to the end. In her last week of life she picked strawberries, made four batches of “Nannie jam”, baked rolls, made chowder – and composed a new theme song for Hockey Night in Canada! It could only have been better if she’d had a chance to bid and make a 7 No Trump hand.

A celebration of Lilian’s life will take place Monday July 21 at Trinity–St. Stephen’s United Church at 1 Ratchford Street in Amherst at 1:00 p.m., with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to a healthcare charity of your choice.

Lilian married Jack Gordon Chapman 11 Oct 1937. Jack was born 26 Feb 1913; died 1999, Halifax, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. [Group Sheet]

    Obituary

Tidnish – Rachel (Shelly) Boland, “Aunt Rae,” 88, formerly of Windsor, Ont., passed away peacefully at her home in Tidnish early in the morning of Sunday, July 20, 2008, after a long period of ill health.
Rachel Rosamand was the youngest daughter of the late Benjamin Smith Atkinson and Maude Louise Trenholm, both of Fort Lawrence.
She was born in Lauder, Man., on May 5, 1920.
Aunt Rae, is survived by her nieces and nephews “Jackie” Jacqueline (Frank) Gallagher of Winnipeg and soon to be of Tidnish; Joan (Bob) MacInnis of Riverview, N.B.; Kathy Chapman of Dartmouth; and Joan Sanderson of Saskatoon, Sask., Ian (Marjorie) MacLean of Tidnish; Paul (Michelle) Chapman, of St. Margaret's Bay and Steve (Karen) Webster of Saskatoon, Sask.
Also surviving her are many children of these nieces and nephews.
Rae grew up in Amherst and attended Acadia Street School and Spring Street Academy for junior and senior high school.
She was always athletic and played on the high school basketball team.
She spent one year at Mount Allison University, then attended and graduated from St. Charles Commercial School in 1932.
She moved to Windsor, Ont., and spent four years working for the American Consulate.
Subsequently, she went to work for a small drugstore chain called Ponds, and moved from clerk, to secretary, to bookkeeper.
She worked with the Ponds chain until it was sold to Kraft Foods.
Rae had been very happy working for her boss “Derb,” and was not interested in staying on with the larger firm.
She did return to work for the Canadian Engineering and Tool Company for the next nine years.
In 1948, Rae married the love of her life, Thomas (Tom) Boland. Tom, an ex- Mountie and Air Force Navigator, made a career with Beauty Counsellor.
They lived their whole married life in Windsor except for a brief stint when Beauty Counsellor employed Tom to help set up an Australian branch. Tom retired in 1977.
They attended the Trinity United Church in Windsor.
Rae loved bridge, golf and curling. She excelled in golf, and was a long time member of the Amherst Golf Club.
She was proud of her many trophies, but was most proud of her hole in one.
Their cottage was built in 1975, and they spent many happy summers in Tidnish.
It became her permanent home in May of 2007.
Rae was predeceased by her husband, Tom, in 1996; also by her parents, brother Donald Charles, age seven (before Rae was born), as well as sister Mina May, who lived only three months.
Rae was very close to her sisters, Alma (Ed) MacLean of Amherst, and Lil (Jack) Chapman of Dartmouth, all of who also predeceased her. Lil just passed away last week.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Campbell's Funeral Home, Amherst (667-9906).
A celebration of her life will be held at the Trinity St. Stephens United Church in Amherst at 1 p.m., on Tuesday, July 29, with Rev. Patti Blundell officiating.
A reception will follow in the Alma MacLean Room.
Interment will take place by her husband in the Victoria Memorial Cemetery, Windsor, Ont., at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Victorian Order of Nurses, the Canadian National Institute for the Blind or to the Red Cross.
