GILLIS, Mary Geraldine (Teed) - It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Geraldine (Teed) Gillis, age 89, of 42 Victoria Street, Middleton, Nova Scotia, on June 27, 2011, at Soldiers Memorial Hospital, in Middleton. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick on August 13, 1921, she was the daughter of John Francis Hannington and Muriel Vivian (Wetmore) Teed. She is survived by daughter, Mary Heather, Annapolis Royal, NS; sons, Donald T. (Victoria), Middleton, NS; W. Bruce (Deborah), Paradise, NS; Thomas G. (Dorena), Halifax, NS; James B. (Flora), Arlington, Texas; Timothy D. Middleton, NS; G. Scott (Josephine), St. Johns, NL; Shaun A., Saint John, NB; and grandchildren, Robbie and Kendra; Jamie, Andrew and Alex; Mhorgan, Chelsea and Kirsten; Shamus and Brianna Gillis, and Michael Young. She is also survived by brother, Hugh (Betty), Toronto, ON, and sister, Gloria Trivett (Donald), Clifton Royal, NB. She was predeceased by her husband of fifty-one years, Donald Archibald Gillis of Paradise, NS, and by infant daughter Melody Anne, as well as by brothers, George and Eric, and sisters, Hazel Hazen, Beth Young, and Alice Teed. She received her early education in the public schools of Saint John and then at Edgehill School for Girls in Windsor, NS. She then attended the Modern Business College in Saint John. A passionate historian, she fought fiercely for her adopted province of Nova Scotia while always remembering her New Brunswick roots. A life-long member of the United Empire Loyalist Association, she was President of the United Empire Loyalist Bicentennial Association of Nova Scotia for the 200th anniversary celebrations in 1983. She was a founding organizer of the Annapolis Valley Highland Games. For many years she was on the executive of the Soldiers Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Provincial Hospital Auxiliary, and the Annapolis Valley Historical Society. She played a pivotal role in saving two of Middleton's most historic buildings from demolition: she lead the charge which resulted in Canada's first MacDonald Consolidated School being reborn as the MacDonald Museum and was instrumental in having the old Holy Trinity Anglican Church declared a Heritage Site. She also took great pride in the Gillis familys association with the Clan MacPherson and led two family excursions to Scotland to take part in the Clan Gatherings. Mary was an avid badminton and tennis player who was still giving her seven sons grief on the courts on her eightieth birthday. She will be lovingly remembered and sorely missed. The funeral service will be held at Old Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Lower Middleton at 2 pm on Friday, July 1, 2011. Interment will follow in Old Holy Trinity Cemetery, Middleton. Visitation at Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, Middleton, NS on Wednesday, June 29 from 7 to 9 pm and Thursday, June 30, 2011 from 2 to 4 pm and from 7 to 9 pm. Flowers are welcome. Obituary
It is with great sadness that her family announces the death of Mary Heather Gillis of Annapolis Royal, formerly of Middleton, Nova Scotia. She was the daughter of the late Donald A. and Mary G. (Teed) Gillis of Middleton. Heather was born in London, Ontario on August 19th 1950. She started life as a happy pretty little girl in her mother's image but before she reached school age the symptoms of Cerebral Palsy began to manifest themselves. She spent the rest of her life battling the continuingly more disabling effects of that disease. Although her physical capabilities were progressively impaired, her mental accuity was never diminished. Heather attended MacDonald School and MRHS in Middleton and made many lifelong friends of all ages in the community. Despite the trials and tribulations brought on by her medical condition she managed to maintain a sense of humour and ability to enjoy the little things in life that often amazed those around her. Until shortly after her 50th birthday, she lived at at home with Mum, Dad and brother Tim. Eventually the constant care, which she required led to her moving to the Annapolis Royal Nursing Home. Heather's joys in life were simple: a car ride (especially in a convertible) on a warm summer day was made more enjoyable when embellished by the jealous "Ooohs" from the staff at the home. A drive at Christmas time to view the lights would brighten up her day immensely. She loved correspondence from family and friends, a variety of music, and liver & bacon (her favourite meal) on her birthday. Heather very much enjoyed visits from family and friends and would be quite adamant about people signing her guest book. Nieces and nephews could light up her day and, more recently, pictures of grand-nieces and nephews were particularly well received. She also loved animals, especially babies and had a large collection of pictures of the pets of her friends and family. Heather was overjoyed with the turnout of well-wishers when she was "sprung" from the home for a party at the Middleton Legion on her 60th Birthday. She is survived by brothers, Don Jr. (Victoria), Middleton; Bruce (Debbie) Paradise, NS; Thom (Dorena), Halifax; Jim (Flora), Midland, Texas; Tim, Middleton; Scott (Jose), St. John's, Nfld; Shaun, Gondola Point, NB. She was predeceased by an infant sister, Melody. --The family wishes to thank the staff and many volunteers at the Annapolis Royal Nursing Home who gave Heather such excellent care and did so many little things to entertain her and make her life more enjoyable over the past 13 years. Donations in her memory can be made to The MacDonald Museum or the Old Holy Trinity Charitable Trust. A family prayer service and gathering was held at the home of Bruce & Debbie Gillis on Saturday January 4th at 3:00 pm. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service and interment will take place at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 19th in Old Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Middleton. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448.
