Obituary
Nils Liljemark,
1943 – 2023
Dieppe, NB - On January 25, 2023, at 16:30 hrs and four days short of his 80th birthday, CWO (Retired) Nils "Al" Liljemark (CD2), passed away peacefully at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre, Moncton, NB. Born in Moncton, then moved to Grande-Digue, Nils was the son of Anna (Vienneau) and PeterLiljemark. Nils is survived by the love of his life, Laure, for over 60 years and worked every one of those days to get it right. Also survived by his sister, Shirley Legere (Al), his brothers, Lloyd (Mary) and Albert (Gloria), his brother-in-law, Wilfred Caissie (Imelda) and his sister-in-law, Marie Anne Eagles (Ben), nieces and nephews. Nils "Al" joined the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals (CAF) in 1960. His 35-year career took him to many far away lands. Egypt, Italy, Norway, Germany, and postings across many military bases across this great nation, Canada. During his service and more so when he retired, volunteering was his passion. While in Nova Scotia, he served on the Board of Directors of the YM/YWCA Halifax, Dartmouth, and Truro. He was a member of the NB Sigs Organization, Atlantic Sigs Organization, and the Blue Helmets. He was president of the Dieppe Boys and Girls Club for 12 years, president of the Seniors Residence Notre-Dame-de-Lorette for 8 years, 12 years and to present, as the president of the Dieppe Military Veterans' Association, of which he was so proud. Nils was the recipient of the Special Service Medal (SSM), Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal (CPPSM), United Nations Emergency Medal (UNEF2), Queen Elizabeth 2 Silver Jubilee Medal, Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers, and the Canadian Forces Decoration (Post-nominal letter "CD") and the volunteer of the year award in 2018 from the city of Dieppe and the Dieppe Military Veterans' Association. Nils always enjoyed the personal touch when presenting military history to schools throughout Moncton, Riverview, and Dieppe area. Nils was superbly respected by the Dieppe Military Veterans' Association Membership, Executive, City Council, Politicians, foreign dignitaries and all who were fortunate enough to have known and interacted with him. As one of his peers put it: I know Nils from my days in the CAF, he made a uniform look like a piece of art, and he encouraged those around him to show the same respect for the uniform. Great leader and mentor, he will certainly be missed." Steve Lovett.
