OBITUARY

At Chapman Settlement after an illness of three months which she bore with Christian resignation to the Divine will, Sophia CHAPMAN, aged 66 years. She was twice married her first husband being the late Charles Oulten of Lorneville, by whom she left eight children, as follows viz Amelia, now Mrs. D.L. Polly, of Winchester, Mass., Mary, now Mrs. J.H. Chapman, Lorneville; Alice, now Mrs. S.J. Mattinson, Oxford, N.S., Olivia, now Mrs. Burton Cloney, Taunton, Mass., Abbie, wife of Hazen E. Chapman, Chapman Settlement, Ellsworth, Woburn Mass., and Joseph B., Chapman Settlement. She was a faithful wife and loving mother. Truly it can be said of her that her children rise up to call her blessed. Deceased was Miss Sophia Pearl, of Oxford, N.S. Much sympathy is felt for Mr. Chapman and family of deceased. The funeral took place from her late residence. Rev. Mr. Patterson, of Amherst Head officiated. After the services at the house the remains were taken to Lorneville, and laid beside her husband in the family lot in the Methodist Cemetery. The pall beares were Leonard Greeno, Agustus Baxter, J.H. Angus and Robert Chapman. Moses Chapman was funeral director. The funeral was the larest seen here for some time.

OBITUARY

Following an illness of three months duration the death of Mrs. Samuel MATTINSON occurred at the home of her son, Floyd Mattinson, River View, on Friday evening, Sept. 12th.

Mrs. Mattinson, the former Alice Oulton, was born seventy-five years ago at Lornville, Cumb. Co., a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Oulton. At an early age she married Samuel Mattinson, and spent the greater part of her long and useful life in Mt. Pleasant, moving to River View shortly after the death of her husband several years ago.

Mrs. Mattinson was the possessor of a fine Christian character, and was a devoted member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, River View. At the building and dedication of St. Andrew's two years ago, she was the generous donor of the church organ which shall stand there as a tribute to her fidelity for generations to come.

Many to-day are mourning the loss of one whose influence for good was keenly felt. It is in the home, however, where her presence will be so greatly missed, and one son Floyd, with whom she made her home, and three daughters, (Rena) Mrs. James Fraser, River View; (Martha) Mrs. G.E. Black, Oxford; and (Levia) Mrs. Angus Dixon, River View, are left to mourn the loss of a loving mother. Mrs. Mattinson is also survived by two sisters and two brothers namely, Mrs. Bert Cloney, Edmonton, Alberta; Mrs. Hazen Chapman, Chapman Settlement; Ellsworth Oulton, Farmington, Mass.; and Charles Oulton, Baie Verte. Several grandchildren and great grandchildren survive.

The funeral service was held from her late home in River View on Sept. 14th, and was very largely attended. Dr. L.L. Young had charge of the service, and Mrs. Mattinson's former pastor, Chaplain E.G.B. Foote, R.C.N., Halifax, assisted. The choir from St. James' Church, Oxford rendered favorite selections of the deceased namely, "The Shepherds' Psalm", "In the Sweet Bye and Bye", and "Abide with Me". Dr. Young in his brief address made fitting reference to the exemplary life of the late Mrs. Mattinson, and also left words of comfort to the bereaved.

Messrs. Thos. Berry, Halifax, Duncan Colbourne, Pugwash, and four grandsons, Norman, Percy, Floyd and Carl Fraser acted as pallbearers. Interment was in the family lot at Mt. Pleasant cemetery.

Mr. Henry Finley was funeral director.

Obituary

The funeral of the late Charles Edward Oulton, who passed away at Tidnish, was held Sunday afternoon from the Lorneville United Church.  Rev. A. Moore of Baie Verte had charge of the service assisted by Rev. J. Douglas of Northport.  The hymns sung by the Lorneville choir were "The Old Rugged Cross", by special request:  "Lead Kindly Light" and "In the Garden".  Mrs. Charles Stewart was organist.  There were many floral tributes.  Interment was made in the Lorneville cemetery.  The pallbearers were five grandsons and a nephew, Ross and Russell Beaton, Guy and Donald Oulton, Darrell Oulton and Carmen Chapman.  The late Mr. Oulton is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Alex Beaton of Lorneville and Mrs. Blair Chappell of Truemanville, and two sons, Manford of Amherst and Edgar of Tidnish with whom he resided; one sister, Mrs. Burton Cloney of Edmonton, Alta., and one brother, Ellsworth of Framingham, Mass., eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  His wife and one son predeceased him thirty-seven years ago.

OBITUARY

The death of Mrs. Annie Sophie CHAPMAN, wife of Hazen Chapman of Chapman Settlement, occurred this morning at an early hour after an illness extending over a period of three years. The deceased was well known and highly esteemed in the community in which she lived, and took an active interest in church and local affairs when her health permitted. She was a member of the Ladies Aid, and of fine Christian character. The late Mrs. Chapman, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Oulton of Lorneville, was 63 years of age. She is survived by her husband, one son, Carmen at home, and three daughters, Hilda, a member of the Amherst teaching Staff, Nova, teacher at Chapman Settlement, and Reta at home, who cared for her mother during her illness. There also survive one sister, Mrs. Burton Cloney of Edmonton, Alberta, and two brothers, Charles E. Oulton of Baie Verte and Ellsworth Oulton of Framingham, Mass. The remains are resting at Furlong's Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements have not been completed, pending weather and road conditions.

MRS. G. ERNEST BLACK - OXFORD - Funeral service was held Aug. 15 at the Church of the Nazarene for Mrs. Ernest Black of Oxford, who died Aug. 13 at Lockhart's Nursing Home in Amherst after a lengthy illness at the age of 77. The daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Mattinson of Mount Pleasant, she was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, and a life member of both the Women's Missionary Society an the British and Foreign Bible Society. Mrs. Black is survived by her husband; one daughter Sylvia (Mrs. Thomas H. Berry), Halifax; one brother Floyd S. Mattinson, Riverview, N.S.; and two sisters, Mrs. James P. Fraser and Mrs. Angus Dixon, both of Oxford. Rev. R. R. Cribbis officiated at the funeral service. Interment was in Pine Grove Cemetery, Oxford.

OXFORD - Mrs. James Phillip Fraser, 88, of Oxford, died Tuesday in All Saints Hospital, Springhill. Born in Mount Pleasant she was the former Mary Mattinson, daughter of the late Samuel and Alice (Oulton) Mattinson. She resided in Riverview for most of her life. She was an adherent of the Presbyterian Church. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Thelma Colborne, Dorothy (Mrs. Newton Wood), and a son, Floyd, all of Oxford; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband; three sons, Percy, Norman, Carl; two sisters, Martha, Olevia; a brother, Floyd. RIVERTON - Mrs. Angus Dixon, 83, formerly of Oxford, Cumberland County, died Sunday in Pictou County Home for the Aged. The former Lydia Sophia Mattinson, she was born at Mount Pleasant, daughter of the late Samuel and Alice (Oulton) Mattinson. She lived in Oxford for 25 years.
Surviving are a daughter, Gladys (Mrs. George Williams), Hopewell; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Renia (Mrs. James Fraser), Oxford; a brother, Floyd, Riverview. She was predeceased by her husband and a sister, Martha.
The body is at H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton, and will be transferred today to Black's Funeral Home, Oxford, from where funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Mount Pleasant cemetery, Cumberland County.

OBITUARY

The death of Vera Mildred, wife of Blair CHAPPELL of Truemanville, occurred suddenly at Highland View Hospital early Tuesday evening. The deceased had not been in good health for the past three years, and underwent an operation a few weeks ago from which she was recovering. She was 48 years of age, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Oulton of Lorneville. She was a practical nurse and was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever she was called upon. She was a member of the United Church and secretary of the Ladies Aid Society. She will be much missed by her family and friends. Besides her husband she is survived by three daughters, Evelyn (Mrs. Carl Trueman) of Truemanville, Norma (Mrs. Frank Allen) of Amherst, Ruby (Mrs. Raymond Brown) of Athol, one son, Layton of Truemanville, one sister, Mrs. Alex Beaton of Lorneville and one brother, Manford Oulton of Amherst, and three grandchildren. A brother Edgar predeceased her two years ago. The remains will rest at Furlong's Funeral Home until Thursday afternoon at which time they will be taken to the home at Truemanville from which place the funeral service, will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.

Ruth Gertrude (Oulton) Robinson - Simonds 98 of Natick died Wednesday June 12, 2002 in her home.
She was the wife of the late Melvin Robinson and the late Leonard Simonds. Born in Woburn, Massachusetts, a daughter of the late Ellsworth and Maude (Forbes) Oulton, she lived in Natick the past 76 years.
She is survived by one son Richard Robinson, two grandsons David Robinson of Framingham, Massachusetts, and Richard Robinson Jr of Colorado, two great grandchildren Jeffrey and Holly Robinson.
The funeral will be held Saturday June 15, 2002 at 10am at the John Everett and sons Funeral home in Natick.

FRASER, Floyd Lewis - Lower Main Street, Oxford, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 15, 2000, at his home in the presence of his loving family at the age of 83. Born in Riverview, Cumberland Co., he was a son of the late James P. Fraser and leRena (Mattinson) Fraser. He was a member of the St. James Presbyterian Church, Oxford. He was a journeyman in the carpentry trade, builder of many large construction projects in Oxford, and the surrounding area of Cumberland County, including the Oxford Medical Centre and the Senior Citizens Complex in Collingwood. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and master gardener and was known in the community for his faith in God, kindness to all and his endless generosity. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Cora Jeanette (Simpson) Fraser; daughters, Joyce McMasters and her husband Bruce, Millvale; Faye Walzak and her husband Greg, Chatham, Ont.; son, James Fraser and his wife Donna, Oxford; sister, Ms. Dorothy Wood, Halifax; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Mrs. Thelma Colborne; brothers, Carl, Norman and Percy Fraser. A loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Remains are resting in Allen's Funeral Home, 60 Water Street, Oxford. Visitation was held Sunday afternoon and evening. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. today, in Allen's Funeral Home, 60 Water Street, Oxford. Burial to take place in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. OULTON, Rodger "Darrell" - 77, passed away April 1, 2008, at home after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in Amherst, Cumberland Co., December 1, 1930, he was the only son of the late Manford R. and L. Alice (Davidson) Oulton. He was a carpenter for 62 years, learning the trade from his father in his early teens. He took great pride in everything he did and for that reason was much in demand. He was a "jack of all trades" having the ability to repair most anything and make it work. Darrell's greatest love was deer hunting and he, along with Keith Austin, built a hunting camp in Gilbert Mountain, Canaan, Cumberland Co. in 1989. This became his favorite retreat every summer and fall. Surviving are his wife of nearly 55 years, Ruth M. (Chapman) Oulton, Fall River; one daughter, Carol Whalen, Nine Mile River; four sons, Noel, Fall River; Stephen, Enfield; Mark, Hatchets Lake and Cory, Canadian Coast Guard, Ont.; three grandsons; three granddaughters; one step great-granddaughter, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Darell was predeceased by a sister, Lidy Smith (Oxford Junction) and two infant sisters. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Cole Harbour Funeral Home & Crematorium. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 6 at 2 p.m. in St. John's United Church, Fall River, Rev. Valerie Kingsbury officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. Family flowers only. Donations in Darrell's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, St. John's United Church, Fall River, or a charity of your choice. Burial in Fall River Cemetery following the reception.

Evelyn Trueman
1923-2009
The death of Evelyn Trueman, age 85, of Truemanville, NS, occurred on Sunday, August 9, 2009 at the High Crest Nursing Home, Springhill.

Born in Truemanville, she was a daughter of the late Blair and Vera (Oulton) Chappell.

Evelyn was a member of the Sunrise Trinity United Church and UCW. She was also a member of the Pythian sisters, Elizabeth Temple # 6. A loving and caring person, she was always available to help anyone in need including her family. Evelyn was a talented person, being able to do crafts, knitting, sewing and making numerous wedding cakes for family members.

Evelyn will be sadly missed by her sister, Ruby (Raymond) Brown, Athol; grandson, Keith (Natasha) Trueman, Truemanville whom she enjoyed taking care of as a child; great granddaughter, Etta; daughter-in-law, Sandra Trueman; sisters-in-law, Ruby Trueman, Sarah (Kenny) Atkinson and Opal Chappell; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Carl, Step-son Ralph, a sister, Norma and brothers, Albert and Layton.

Evelyn's remains have been cremated under the direction of the Furlong Jones Funeral Home, Amherst (667-8777) from where a memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at 11 am, Rev. Philip Read officiating. Burial in the Truemanville Cemetery.

AMHERST - Mrs. Frank G. ALLEN, 39, of 3 Central Ave., Amherst, died at Highland View Hospital Thursday morning following a lengthy illness. She was seriously ill for the past few months. She was the former Norma Mae Chappell, daughter of W. Blair Chappell and the late Mrs. Chappell of Truemanville. She was born in Truemanville, but lived in Amherst for the past 20 years. She was predeceased by her mother in 1951. Besides her husband she is survied by one daughter, Marie (Mrs. Perley McFadden, Jr.) of Amherst; one son, Albert Allen, at home; her father, W. 1930-2009
OULTON, Guy Edgar, born March 17, 1930; passed away peacefully in the home he was born in Baie Verte, NB, with his family by his side.

He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Wendy (Mountain); son, Shawn Oulton (Michelle Myers), Eastern Passage; Erin (Oulton) Allen (Jason Hamel), Amherst; six grandchildren, Jerrick, Jordan, Austin, Shelby, Olivia and Cash.

He was predeceased by his father Edgar Oulton, mother Helen (Strang) Oulton, and brother Donald Oulton.

Guy, “The Fonz”, will be sadly missed by many members of the community, and remembered for always being there to lend a helping hand.

The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to Colleen, and the rest of the nurses with Extra Mural, for their support and guidance as we helped Guy on his courageous journey home.

Cremation has been entrusted to Jones Funeral Home, Sackville, NB.

In respect of Guy’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. A memorial will be held on Monday, December 14, at the Tidnish Bridge Community Hall, from 6-8pm. We ask that family and friends join us to share stories and celebrate Guy’s life with us.
