Obituary
RONALD EDWIN TINGLEY In the first hour of December 24, 1999, at the Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg, MB, Ron Tingley died at the age of 84 years. Born on October 24, 1915, in Hopewell Hill, New Brunswick, Ron could trace his ancestry back to Palmer Tingley who left England in 1635 on the ship Planter for Plymouth, USA. Following the American Revolution, a number of Tingley United Empire Loyalists immigrated to New Brunswick and his father David was a descendant of this branch. His mother, Agnes Blackwood, emigrated directly from Scotland before 1900. In the late thirties, after brief stints as a wharf rat, a stevedore, a rum runner, a bushwhacker and a truck driver, Ron came west and found steady employment with the Patricia Transportation Company. During the Second World War, his job was declared a vital service because he was freighting supplies in Northwestern Ontario from Hudson to Red Lake before there was a road to the gold mines. In December 1946, Ron drove the first load of freight over the new highway 105, eight months before it was officially opened. Rons position changed from catskinner to truck driver and eventually to Red Lake Terminal Manager in 1956 when the company became Soo-Security Motorways. He remained with the same company until his retirement in June 1982, a total of 43 years. In 1941 Ron married Catherine Long of New Brunswick who predeceased him in 1961. In the following years Ron was very active in the Lions and Elks service clubs because he was always interested in the welfare of the community. In 1965 he married Kay Jessiman Milliken of Morden, MB, who was teaching in Red Lake. In August 1999 Ron and Kay came to Winnipeg for Ron to receive medical attention and stayed on to be closer to their families. Ron will be lovingly remembered by his wife Kay; his daughter Monica Swereda of Winnipeg; his stepson Jack Milliken of Calgary; his stepdaughter Eveline Milliken (Gordon Taylor) his grandchildren, Deborah, Edward and Geraldine Swereda; stepgrandchildren, Katherine and Hilary Taylor; and by his brother Edgar, all of Winnipeg. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Brenden and Charon Swereda of Boggy Creek, MB and by many relatives in New Brunswick. A celebration of Rons life will be held at a private memorial service in Winnipeg. Cremation has taken place, with interment to follow at a later date in Red Lake, ON. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Arthritis Society, the Parkinsons Foundation, the Cancer Society or to a charity of their choice.
