    Obituary

    Rupert Swaine, Canso - The oldest and one of the most respected citizens of Canso, Robert [sic] Swaine, passed on December 30 at the ripe old age of 93 years. Mr. Swaine was born in Canso, and followed his trade as a carpenter. He enjoyed good health until a couple of years ago. The past few years, he and Mrs. Swaine made their homes with their children, first with their daughter Cora (Mrs. Charles Kavanaugh) and within the past year or so with their son Fred and Mrs. Swaine, who tenderly cared for him in his illness. The deceased leaves to mourn for him his widow; three sons, Walter and Fred, Fishery Officer, both at Canso, Clarence, Western Canada; two daughters, Cora (Mrs. Charles Kavanaugh), Montreal, and Annie Laurie, teacher at Vancouver. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. W. H. Johnson at the residence of his son.

    CANSO'S OLDEST RESIDENT IS DEAD - The death of Canso's oldest resident and a very respected citizen, RUPERT SWAINE, occured at the home of his son FRED, fisheries inspector for Canso District. The late Mr. Swaine, who had reached the advanced age of 92 years last June, followed the carpenter trade during his working years but had been in failing health recently. He is survived by his wife, three sons, FRED, fisheries officer, Canso; with whom the aged couple resided during recent years; WALTER, a carpenter, also of Canso; and CLARENCE in Western Canada; and two daughters, MRS. CHARLIE KAVANAGH, Montreal and ANNIE LAURIE, teacher, Vancouver, B.C. The funeral was conducted by the Rev.W.H. Johnson, Pastor of the Canso Baptist Church.

    Margaret G Feltmate, Canso - Mrs Margaret Gladys Feltmate, 70, of Union Street, Canso, died Tuesday in Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso. Born in Canso , she was a daughter of the later Walter and Mary (Spears) Swaine. She was a member of the United Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Oakley. five daughters, Gloria (Mrs Lawrence Johnson), Spryfield; Sharon (Mrs Gerald Mont), Lower Sackville; Phyllis (Mrs Gerald Ryan), Kitchener, Ont; Sandra (Mrs Cyril Horne), New Glasgow, and Wanda, Halifax, a son, Oakley Jr, Lower Sackville, six sisters Evelyn (Mrs Robert Smith) Eastern Passage; Lydia (Mrs Eric Foster) Prince Edward Island, Jewel (Mrs James Roberts), Mabel (Mrs Arthur Newell ) and Florence (Mrs Ed Bond) all of Canso; Norma (Mrs Leonard Dobson), Fox Island; three brothers, Douglas and Jack, both of Ontario, and Ross, Canso; nine grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, a brother and three infant sons. The body is in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. Funeral will be 2 pm Friday in United Baptist church, Canso, Rev Timothy Fraser officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Canso.

    DORT, Thomas R. - 64, 4 Greenhill Crt., Antigonish, died December 24, 1994, in St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Canso, he was a son of the late Joseph and Mildred (Swaine) Dort. He resided in Port Hawkesbury for a number of years and operated the Causeway Smoke and Gift Shop. For several years he operated Farmer Tom's Market, Antigonish. Surviving are his wife, the former Rose MacDonald; daughter, Karen, Toronto; brother, Joseph, Brampton, Ont. He was predeceased by a son, Paul. Cremation will take place under the direction of MacIsaac Funeral Home, Antigonish. A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. today in St. Ninian's Cathedral, Antigonish, Rev. Bill Crispo officiating. Burial in parish cemetery at a later date. Donations to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or Canadian Cancer Society.
