Beckwith, Aug. 5 - This community was deeply shocked to learn of the sudden death of Mrs. Lucinda Mattinson which occurred on Monday evening, July 29th. Â Mrs. Mattinson had the misfortune to fall and fracture her hip two weeks previously. Â Hopes were held for her recovery and she seemed to be improving but complications set in and death followed. Â She was born in Mount Pleasant in 1855, her maiden name being Lucinda McCormick. Â In 1873 she married Joseph Mattinson and lived in Lake Killarney till the death of her husband, who predeceased her twenty-six years ago.
Left to mourn their loss are two sons Miner of West Newbury and Alec of Merrimas, Mass., and one daughter, Mrs. W. W. Barbisy (May) of Merrimas, Mass. Â She also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Mary Johnson, East Leicester, Mrs. Dora Dickie, Mount Pleasant, and Mrs. Ursula Darby, residing in Mass., U.S.A. Â Thirteen grandchildren also survive one who tenderly cared for her since the death of her husband and from whose home she was buried. Â Twenty- great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren also survive.
Mrs. Mattinson was a woman of sterling Christian principles and will be greatly missed in this community and in the church and W.M. Society. Â Her funeral was held from the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. William F. Mattinson, on Thursday, Aug. 1st, and was largely attended. Â services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Davis of Trinity United Church, Oxford, assisted by Mr. Knock of Mount Pleasant charge. ... The pall bearers were four grandsons, Norman and Miner Mattinson, Eugene and Joseph McDonald. Â Henry Finley of Linden was funeral director.

MT. PLEASANT - A funeral service was held on April 29 for Mrs. Thomas Dickie at Black's Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant, with Rev. Dewis Rector officiating. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hazen Dixon, Oxford. Mrs. Dickie was born and lived most of her life in Mt. Pleasant. She was a member of the Calvary United Church, Mt. Pleasant. She is survived by five daughters, Amy (Mrs. John Fraser), Oxford; Annie (Mrs. Guy King), Mt. Pleasant; Janet (Mrs. Albert Fahey), Mt. Pleasant; Mary (Mrs. Alex MacKay), River View; and Etta (Mrs. Joseph McCarthy), Port Phillip; three sons, Minor, Stellarton; George, Oakland, California; and Harris, Mt. Pleasant. She was predeceased by her husband in 1939, a son Owen in 1938, and two children in infancy. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Mrs. Mary E. Barbrick 82, 9 Forest St., Merrimac, formerly of Bradford, died last night at the Kenoza Lake Health Resort. Â She was born in Rosendale, Nova Scotia, Jan. 2, 1874, daughter of Joseph E. and Lucinda (McCormac) Mattinson, and lived in Bradford 26 years. Â She had been living in Merrimac 12 years. Â Mrs. Barbrick was a past noble grand of Kenoza Rebekah lodge, IOOF, and a member of Kenoza Circle. Â She was also a member of the Past Noble Grands club, Merrimac. Â She attended the Portland Street Bapist Church. Â Besides her husband Weston W. Barbrick, she leaves a daughter, Mrs. Leonard Godfrey, Detroit, Michigan, two brothers, Miner Mattinson, Chicago, Illinois and Alexander Mattinson, Merrimac: Â two grandchildren, Florence M. Burke, Detroit, and Stewart M. Mattinson, Bradford and four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephew. Â The funeral service will be held Saturday afternoon at 3 at the Tilton-Hozers Funeral Home Main St. Â Burial will be at the Elmwood Cemetery. Â Calling hours at the funeral home will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.

The funeral of Mr. Angus Mattinson, who was killed by the falling of a tree, took place Tuesday 19th, at Beckwith, the funeral service was conducted by Rev. W.J. Hamilton in the Baptist Church, where a large number of friends gathered and followed the remains to the cemetery. Â Deceased was a son of deacon Joseph Mattinson, of Beckwith, he leaves a widow and two young children, a father and mother, two sisters, and two brothers, to mourn his loss, the entire community extends sympathy to the bereaved family.

The death occurred Wednesday, July 21, 1943, at the Highland View Hospital Annex, Amherst, N.S. of Kezia G. McDonald, beloved wife of John H. McDonald, Mt. Pleasant. Â She was born at Shinimicas on Jan. 30th, 1893, the daughter of Lucinda Mattinson and the late Joseph E. Mattinson. Â The late Mrs. McDonald was a member of the United Baptist Church, Oxford for the past twenty years. Â She was held in high esteem by [a] wide circle of people, being a loving mother, good friend and a kind neighbour. Â Mrs. McDonald leaves to mourn their losses a loving husband, two daughters, Eva, Mrs. John Wood, Oxford, Freda, Mrs. Robert Henderson, Woodstock, N.B., three sons, Jerry and Eugene of Oxford and Joseph of Mt. Pleasant, also her aged mother and several grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Mary Barbric, two brothers, Miner and Alex Mattinson of Mass. Â The funeral service was held on Sunday, July 25, at 2 P.M. from her late home in South Oxford. Â Rev. Mr. Estabrooks of the United Baptist Church conducted the service. Â The scripture reading was taken from St. John's Gospel, 14th chapter. Â Hymns sung were, "Does Jesus Care", Blest Be the Tie That Binds". Â A duet was rendered by Mrs. Wylie Doncaster and Mr. Estabrooks, "Good Night and Good Morning". Â The interment was made in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery. NORWOOD – A private service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 7, in the May Funeral Home, 85 Nichols St., Norwood, for Howard A. Johnson, 88, of Norwood, who died Sept. 3, in Amherst, Nova Scotia. Burial will take place at Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton.  Born in Nova Scotia, Mr. Johnson had been a resident of Norwood for 63 years. He worked as an inspector for Bird and Son Flooring Division and was a member of the Orient Lodge A.F. and A.M. in Norwood.  He was the husband of Margaret J. (Forbes) Johnson and the father of Aviard S. Johnson and Donald L. Johnson, both of Norwood. He is survived by eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  Donations may be made to the Newton Lung Association.

Â Born in Little River, he was a son of the late Hiram and Mary (McCormick) Johnson. Â He had been visiting at his summer cottage in Port Howe. Â He is survived by his wife, the former M. and later moved to Stellarton and Truro. He was a retired railroad engineer

of Immanuel Baptist Church. He is survived by a son Carman, Truro; two
daughters, Mrs. Anne Smith, Truro; Marcia (Mrs. Ivan Currie), Dartmouth;
five sisters, Mrs. Stella Colquhoun and Edith MacDonald, both of New

OXFORD - Mrs. John A. Fraser, 88, of Oxford, died Wednesday at All Saint's Hospital, Springhill.
Born in Mount Pleasant, the former Amy Jane Dickie, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Dora (McCormack) Dickie.
Surviving are a son, Aubrey, Oxford; three sisters, Mrs. Janet Fahey, Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. Mary MacKay, Riverview; Mrs. Etta McCarthy, Pugwash; two brothers, Minor, Stellarton; Harris, Mt. Pleasant; four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband she was predeceased by a daughter, Greta Graves; three sisters, Clara and Bessie in infancy; Mrs. Annie King; and two brothers, Owen and George.
The body is at Black's Funeral Home, Oxford, from where funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Rev. Maynard Rector officiating. was held at Mount Pleasant Sunday, Rev. Lewis J. Rector officiating. Interment was in Birch Grove Cemetery. Mrs. King died at home, Thursday. A life resident of Mount Pleasant, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Dora (McCormick) Dickey. Mrs. King was a member of Calvary United Church. She served as a member of the session for many years. STELLARTON - Minor Aubrey Dickie, 83, of 127 River Street, died Wednesday in Aberdeen Hospital. Born in Mount Pleasant, Cumberland County, he was a son of the late Thomas and Dora (MacCormick) Dickie. He lived in Stellarton most of his life and was a retired engineer with the CNR. He was an adherent of Sharon St. John United Church and a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. Surviving are a daughter Lois Peers, New Glasgow; three sons, Donald, New Glasgow; Lawson, Oxford; Guy, Stellarton; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Janet (Mrs. Albert Fahey), Mary (Mrs. Alex MacKay), both of Oxford; Etta (Mrs. Joe MacCarthy), Pugwash; a brother Harris, Oxford. McCARTHY, Etta Christena - 99, Angevine Lake, Cumberland Co., formerly of Pugwash and Port Phillip, passed away on June 7, 2000, at home. Born in Mount Pleasant, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Dora (McCormick) Dickie. She was a member of the Calvary United Church, Port Howe and a life member of the Calvary United Church UCW. She was a charter member and past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Sunrise Chapter 50, Pugwash. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are daughter, Muriel Chapman and husband Harry, Amherst Head; son, Fred McCarthy and companion Pauline Finley, Shinimicas; grandchildren, Brian, Faye, Isabel, Gerald, Roy, Dana and Carolyn; great-grandchildren, Lindsay, Barbie, Thomas, Erin, Ashlea, Brian, Blair, Alida, Jonathan, Christena, Joanna, Jennifer, Kelly, Bonita, Becky and David; great great-granddaughter, Taylor; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph; daughter, Evelyn Mundle; sisters, Amy Fraser, Annie King, Janet Fahey, Mary MacKay, Clara and Bessie in infancy; brothers, Owen, Minar, George and Harris.
