    Obituary

REEDER, Eleanor Alexandra, RN - 77, Lower Sackville, a graduate of Royal Victoria, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 27, 2001, in the VG Site, QEII, Halifax. Born December 14, 1923, in Jolicure, N.B., she was a daughter of the late Oscar and Eva (Phinney) Oulton. Eleanor was a lifetime elder of Knox United Church in Lower Sackville and served on a number of committees. Eleanor was a long-time advocate for Sackville area seniors, from her position as a charter member of the Sackville Seniors' Advisory Council to the on-going work for the Nursing Care Facility. She played a key role in developing the seniors' drop-in centre, Silver and Gold, in Downsview Mall, served as council president for six years, raised funds from donations and sales to meet rental expenses for the centre and led a group of volunteers in its operation until a coordinator could be found. In Canadian Pensioners Concerned, she educated volunteers on the growing needs of seniors. She organized blood pressure clinics and income tax assistance for seniors and had served as a board member of Beacon House Food Bank. As a registered nurse, she used her experience to address groups interested in health care problems. She had also worked on cancer screening programs and was active in the Sackville Lioness Club. She had won a number of awards for her volunteerism and community service and received the Confederation Commemorative Medal, Canada 125 Medal on nomination of one voice, a 1990 provincial community service award, a 1996 award for her service with the Sackville Seniors' Advisory Council and a year 2000 medal for her volunteer service to Sackville, as well as many others. Eleanor was also instrumental in putting in place the parking policies at the QEII Health Sciences Centre sites for extended care patients and their families. She was an avid bridge player in Bedford, Sackville and Mount Uniacke. Surviving are her children, Deborah (John) Benn, John (Lynne) Reeder, Elizabeth (Gary) Porter, all of Sackville; sister, Bessie Horsman, Moncton; grandchildren, Andrew, Scott and Holly Benn; Lindsey and Allen Reeder; Rebecca and James Porter; great-grandson, Myles Benn; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Lee Stanley Reeder; sister, Alice Bowser; brother, Ralph Oulton. Visitation 7-9 p.m. today, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Dr., Lower Sackville. Funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, in Knox United Church, 567 Sackville Dr., Lower Sackville, Rev. Robert Chapman officiating. Interment in Oakridge Memory Gardens, Old Sackville Road. Reception to follow in the church hall. Flowers welcome or a donation in Eleanor's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice. The family wishes to thank Dr. Robert Wadden and all the other doctors who took such great care of our mother, Francoise and the nursing team with Palliative Care and the many friends and neighbours who brought food and support.
