    The 'Post' contains some particulars of the drowning accident in the Tidnish river (West. Co.) on Monday last by which a young man named James BRUNDAGE lost his life. He was on a raft fishing for smelts with an elderly man named George STRANG. They were standing on the end of the raft pulling in their net and the force of the current capsized their frail craft. Mr. Strang saved himself by clinging to a piece of timber, but his companion sank, though only about twenty yards from the shore. The body was found the same afternoon. Mr. Brundage leaves a wife and two children.

    OBITUARY

    One of Amherst's old citizens passed away today in the person of Ephraim E. STRANG, at his home No. 9 Robie St. Mr. Strang has been ill during the past summer, and his death was not unexpected. He is survived by two sons, Will and Henry, and three married daughters, Mrs. Russell Scott, Robie St., Mrs. Anderson in the States, and a third daughter Emma also in the United States. The late Mr. Strang was well known in Amherst and throughout the Country, and his death will be heard of with regret by a wide circle of friends. The funeral will be held from the home at two o'clock on Sunday afternoon.

    Obituary

    A large circle of friends throughout Cumberland will regret to learn of the death of C.G. STRANG, the well known merchant of Tidnish Bridge. Mr. Strang has been a sufferer from Bright's disease for some time but no immediate danger was anticipated with regard to his condition and he was about attending to his business as usual until last Saturday when he took to his bed. He passed away last evening and the funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock. The deceased is survived by his wife and one son, and two daughters. The late Mr. Strang at the time of his death was in the fifty fourth year of his age. He was a moderate Conservative in politics and a member of the Methodist Church. The deceased was highly respected by all who knew him and his death will be sincerely mourned by a large circle of friends.

    Misc:
    W.B. Strang was a business man in Amherst, Nova Scotia. He owned and ran a livery stable which was located across from the train station and next to the Amherst Hotel. He later started a taxi business around 1907 - believed to be the oldest taxi in the Maritimes - and was one of the first people to own a car in Amherst. He eventually owned a fleet of cars by the 1940's. He also had a contract with the Postal Service for parcel delivery.

    He owned a large Victorian home located at 99 Church Street. When his family was young, and while he supported other members of his family ie. sister Bessie, his mother-in-law, and cousin Hannah Embree Bent, he owned two working farms - one in Brookdale and took hay off the one on the Tantramar Marsh. I imagine the hay was used in the Livery Stable operation. The Brookdale farm provided vegetables and food for the family.

    Prior to his marriage he worked at the Amherst Car works as a carpenter and painter. Shortly after his marriage, he took sick with paritonitis (sp?) and spent some recovery time out west visiting his brother, Henry. When he returned, he started the livery stable business and the taxi business.

    According to Auntie Fran, Grandpa left home at an early age and took a job as a carpenter at the Canada Car Works in Amherst. People he worked with nicknamed him "Rock Maple" for some reason. She thought it was because he wore homemade wool socks but I think most people wore homemade socks in the late 1800's.

    Auntie Fran says she understood Grandpa's father, Ephraim Edgar, was a difficult man to get along with which is probably the reason the boys left home early.

    Mr. Merrill V. Strang
    Amherst, Nov. 15 - The largely attended funeral of the late Merrill V. Strang, son of the late Calvin G. and Annie T. Strang, was held on Saturday afternoon from the United Church, Tidnish Bridge, N.B. Mr. Strang was born in Tidnish 44 years ago, his father being a prominent business man there. His sudden passing came as a severe shock to his relatives and many friends. Rev. Aubrey Moore, of Port Elgin, minister of the church, officiated and spoke very impressively from the 14th Chapter of John. The Choir sang, "In The Garden" and "Safe In the Arms of Jesus." The deceased is survived by a wife, son and daughter and two sisters, Mrs. Arthur MacCallum of Amherst and Mrs. T.H. Lambert of Saint John, N.B. The floral tributes from friends and relatives were many and beautiful and included a wreath from the firm of J.A. and W.A. Tingley. The pallbearers were Gordon MacCallum, Arthur MacCallum, Jr., Richard Strang, Eddie Davidson, Edgar Oulton and Willard Weaver.
