James Leard was born in 1845 and married Jane Strang in 1868. Her obituary in the Summerside Journal, August 27, 1880 reads: "At St. Eleanors, P.E.I. on February 29, Mary J. (Mrs. James L Lea) in 33ed year of her age ... for several years subject of much affliction and suffering ... leaves husband and four children." Beyond the fact that their daughter was named Mary Jane, who died in 1891 at age 19, there is no information about a family. On November 11, 1881, this item appeared in the Weslyean "At the residence of CHarles Clark, Esq., on October 26, Mr. James L Lea of St Eleanors to Mrs. Sarah B Leard of North St. Eleanors". On April 30, 1891, the Weslyean had this item "Lizzie S Lea the second wife of James L Lea of Summerside died of consumption on October 31. She had gone to Boston for her health." Family tradition has it that James went to Texas and did well in the oil business, and this bit of information or supposition combined with these items about his second wifes name tends to make of James, a figure of confusion.
