Obituary
Dr. Leigh Bertram Donald FREDERICTON, NB - Leigh B. Donald of Fredericton passed away at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on September 27, 2006 surrounded by his loved ones after an extended battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease). Born in Alma, P.E.I. on February 22, 1928, he was a son of the late Wallace E. and Annie (Cole) Donald. Leigh received his early schooling at Montrose, Alma, Alberton High School and his premedical at Prince of Wales College, Charlottetown, graduating in 1948. During the next 5 years, he worked at various occupations including teaching, farming, trucking and managing a farm produce business. In 1953, he entered Veterinary Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Toronto, and graduated in 1958 with the degrees of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Surgeon. After graduation, he worked for a year and a half in general practice in Sussex, N.B. In 1959 he accepted the position of Supervisor of the N.B. - P.E.I. Cattle Breeders Co-op, Fredericton, N.B. After 10 years in this position, he accepted the position of Director-Contagious Diseases with the Veterinary Inspection Directorate in Fredericton, N.B. and worked there until his retirement in 1993. Over the years, Leigh was active in the Veterinary Medical Association, serving for 17 years in various positions on council and 14 years as Secretary of the New Brunswick Veterinary Association. Leigh had a strong faith and was active in the church. He also loved to tend to his vegetable garden and spend time with his family. He is survived by his wife Grace (Sewell) Donald; sons, Brian and Ian, Fredericton, N.B.; daughter, Cathy, Halifax, N.S.; grandson Coady; brothers, Jack, Alma, P.E.I., Dr. Wallace, Halifax, N.S.; sister, Jean, Winslow, P.E.I.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, Jim; and three sisters, Rae, Isabelle and Verna. He was a model of courage, generosity, and strength for family and friends, and taught us to appreciate each and every day. Arrangements are in care of McAdam's Select Community Funeral Home, Fredericton (458-9170). No visitation by request. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2006 at 1 pm at St. Paul's United Church, 224 York St., Fredericton. Interment will take place at Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the ALS Society of New Brunswick, PO BOX/C.P. 295, Moncton, N.B. E1C 8K9, would be greatly appreciated by the family.
