Obituary
Virginia Elrick, age 87, of Billerica, formerly of Somerville, died early Friday morning, April 1, at the Merrimack Valley Life Care Center surrounded by her loving family.
Ginnie was born on December 6, 1923 in Charlestown, a daughter of Philip and Francis (Nagle) Doherty. She was a graduate of the Somerville High School Class of 1941. As a young adult she worked for years at Boston Woven Hose, and many years later at Polaroid Corporation in Waltham as a telephone operator. She was also a parishioner of St. Andrew’s Parish in Billerica for over a half a century and former member of the St. Andrew's Ladies' Sodality.
On November 18, 1951 she married Heman "Al" Elrick, with whom she shared 52 years of marriage together before his death in April 2004.
Ginnie not only had a great love for family, she also loved to dance, do daily crossword puzzles, play scrabble, talking on the phone with her sisters, and spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. In the 1960s she was known in the “Treble Cove Rd Neighborhood” by all the children for her creation of May Day Parades, making all the decorations and costumes.
She also enjoyed entertaining her extended family and friend at her annual Fourth of July parties. Her passion for the Red Sox grew through the years, and she died on Opening Day of what she hopes, somewhere in heaven, will be another World Series-winning season.
She is survived by her four children, Patti Brigham of Cambridge, Ginny Mignault and her husband Ron of Billerica, Kevin Elrick of Billerica, and Stephen Elrick and his wife Robin of Yarmouth, Maine, her ten grandchildren, and her five great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Elizabeth McCarthy of Lexington, Marie Bennett of Somerville, Fred Doherty of Billerica, and Carol Granfield of Stoneham. She was predeceased by her sister Louise DiMare and brother Philip Doherty, Jr.
