      NORWOOD – Avard S. Johnson died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998 at the Caritas Norwood Hospital.  He was 78.  Previously of Little River, Nova Scotia, Canada, Mr. Johnson was a lifelong resident of Norwood.  Mr. Johnson was an assembly plant superintendent at General Motors for 25 years until his retirement in 1973.  He was a World War II Army veteran.  He was a member of the Orient Lodge A.F. & A.M.; the York Rite Masons in Massachusetts; the DAV, Norwood Post; the American Association of Retired Persons and the Norwood Historical Society.  He leaves his wife, Eleanor E. (Probert) Johnson; his daughters, Karen E. Puglia of East Walpole, Karla C. Daddieco and Marsha C. Johnson, both of South Carolina and Margaret A. Lambert of Norwood; his mother, Margaret J. (Forbes) Johnson of Canada; brother, Donald L. Johnson of Norwood and six grandchildren.  He was the son of the late Howard A. Johnson.  Visiting hours will be Tuesday, Feb. 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the May Funeral Home, 85 Nichols St., Norwood.  A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 1 p.m. at First Congregational Church in Norwood.  Burial will be in Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton.  Donations may be made to First Congregational Memorial Fund, 100 Winter St., Norwood, MA 02602.
