Obituary
COLLINS, Hubert E. - 89, Oxford, formerly of Beckwith, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 30, 2007, in North Cumberland Memorial Hospital, Pugwash. Born in Stonehaven, N.B., he was the youngest son of the late Eanis and Eva (Dempsey) Collins. During the Second World War, he served overseas for three and a half years, and was the proud recipient of the Dutch Medal for the Liberation of Holland. He was a member of Oxford United Baptist Church and choir, and the Oxford and Area Men's Club and choir. For over 50 years, he was a member of both the Pugwash Legion and the Knights of Pythias Lodge, Oxford. After retiring from a lifetime of farming, he remained an avid gardener. He enjoyed music and watching sports. He is survived by his wife, the former Bernice Mattinson; daughter, Ellen (Norman) Wood, Oxford; grandson, Myles Wood, Miramichi, N.B.; one niece and several nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Robert, Thornton, Gerald and Sterling. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in MacDiarmid's Funeral Home, 5075 Main St., Oxford (447-2930). Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Oxford United Baptist Church with Pastor Connie Stewart officiating. Burial in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Donations may be made to L.A. Animal Shelter or a charity of choice.
