Obituary
KIRKPATRICK (Bigelow), Mary Colleen - 73, Meech Avenue, North Sydney, passed away Friday, July 23, 2004, in Northside General Hospital, North Sydney. Born in Springhill, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary (Boyce) Bigelow. Following completion of her high school education, she studied nursing at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, graduated in 1954 and then came to North Sydney with her husband, Dr. Hugh Kirkpatrick. She is survived by her son, Dr. John (Debra), North Sydney; daughters, Susan (Dr. Graham) Opie, North Sydney; Dr. Jane (Dr. Michael) Gillis, Halifax; brothers, William (Joan) Bigelow, Charlottetown; Nathaniel, Springhill; grandchildren, Logan, Lesley and Michael Kirkpatrick, Esther, Sarah and Kirk Opie, Anna, Madeline and Elsie Gillis; sister-in-law, Esther (Dr. Harry) Poulos, Dartmouth; a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Hugh Kirkpatrick. Colleen was a devoted wife, mother and protector. She enjoyed her summers with family and friends in Georges River and winters skiing in Ingonish. She had a great sense of humour and enjoyed the wit of others. The challenge of Colleen's lengthy illness was made easier to endure through the kindness and dedication of her wonderful caregivers. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday in W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will take place 11 a.m. Tuesday in Calvary Baptist Church, North Sydney, Rev. John Hannem officiating. Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Northside Hospital Foundation or Calvary Baptist Church, North Sydney.
