E.J. BAILEY of firm Bailey Bros. left his happy home Monday eve. after tea and proceeded to the rooms of Hose Co. No. 1 of which he had long been a member to take part in the usual company practice. The ladder cart was run out and manned, Bailey and John LINDOW holding the pole, and thus they started down Main St. While the cart was passing down the somewhat steep incline with considerable velocity, some of the hose men jumped on the projecting ladders, tipping the hind part of the cart sufficient to free the king bolt from its place and causing the pole to drop. Bailey and his companion were thrown down, the latter however recovering himself and escaping with a few bruises, while the former being caught by the drag rope was held until one of the wheels of the wagon passed over his chest, fracturing one rib and severely puncturing the lung. Willing arms bore him to H. Paxton Baird's drug store, in front od which the sad accident occurred, where Drs. Hand and Sprague were immediately at hand, who set the broken rib and administered what relief they could, after which he was tenderly borne on a stretcher by his fellow firemen to the residence of his father-in-law, James WATTS. Here Dr. Colter was also in consultation, but it was at once found that owing to the copious internal bleeding, all human aid was fruitless. Mr. Bailey was conscious till about an hour before his died. The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon, the members of Hose Co. 1 and 2 and the members of Carleton Lodge I.O.O.F. walking in a body in procession. Rev. Marshall, assisted by Rev. T. Todd, T.H. Williams of Jacksonville and C.T. Phillips conducted the funeral services of the Methodist Church.
