      Leonard Douglas Peterson 1925-2011
Leonard Douglas Peterson, in his 86th year, of New Maryland, NB, died on August 18th  2011 at Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, Fredericton, NB Leonard was born June 10th 1925 at Point Lepreau, NB and spent the majority of his youth growing up in St.Stephen-Milltown, NB
He was the son of Stephen Peterson and Hazel (née McKay).  He was little brother to Clinton (Fredericton Junction, NB), and big brother to Ruth Sherrard (Calais, ME) and Evelyn Walker (Milltown-St. Stephen, NB).
Leonard married Mabel (née Jewett) on August 30th 1947 at Mactaquac, NB.  Leonard and Mabel have 4 children; Joy, Janet, Joan and Jacalyn.
He was a ‘jack-of-all-trades’ , he worked on the aircraft towards the end of WWII and later specialized in motor mechanics at Capital Garage, Fredericton and advanced to service manager at Creighton Motors.  He ventured out on his own to build and operate Peterson’s Esso Service Station, New Maryland, NB (1956) which was the first service station in that rural community at that time.  He hung up his mechanics cap to take on what would be seen as a major career change of creating Peterson’s Mobile Home Court  and Trailer Sales (1965) and he never looked back.  Leonard was a mover and a shaker, where a hand-shake was as good as a written contract. ‘A man is only as good as his word’.
Leonard found time to tinker with motors in his spare time.  His hobbies included carpentry, fishing, playing cards, shuffleboard and bowling.
Special thanks to George Nixon, Merle & Pearl Smith, and Myrtle Jewett who helped Leonard and Mabel get by in the early years. Special thanks to Faye Nason and Paul Shea, the best neighbours a man could ever have to help out in the later years.  Special thanks to Joy & Janet’s friends who brought food and words of support when we really needed it.  Thanks to the doctors, nurses and therapists of 3NE (DECH), his family physician, Dr. Kerr, and 3E Palliative Care Unit (DECH).  Special thanks to Pastor Ralph Irvine whose regular visits and comforting words gave peace to the family.
There will be no visitation per Leonard’s wishes.  The funeral service will be held at the J. A. McAdam Memorial Chapel, 160 York St., Fredericton, NB on Tuesday, August 23rd at 1 p.m with Rev. Ralph Irving officiating.  Private interment will be held in the  Pickard Merithew Cemetery, Mouth-of-Keswick, NB.  In lieu of flowers donations can be made to your charity of choice.
