      Irene B. Fillmore 1926-2014
Irene Blair Fillmore - age 88, passed away in Halifax at Northwood Senior Centre on April 7, 2014. A writer, business woman and housewife, Irene lived in Embassy Towers on Spring Garden Road in recent years. Irene was born in Digby, N.S. in 1926, the daughter of Maurice and Cora Cunningham. She married her high school sweetheart, Frank Harris Fillmore,  in Kentville in 1942. A son, Nick was born in 1943. As a youth, Irene enjoyed playing hockey in a women¹s league. For many years, Irene and Frank worked together operating Fillmore¹s Valley Nurseries in Centreville and later Kentville, where Irene will be remembered by thousands of patrons. They later moved to Dartmouth, where Frank was editor of The Dartmouth Free Press. Some of Irene¹s favourite times occurred when the two of them operated the Black Panther Coffee House in Dartmouth. In the late 1960s, Irene, Frank, Nick and Nick¹s former wife Brenda Large ran the upstart weekly newspaper, The 4th Estate in Halifax. Irene also wrote newspaper articles and feature pieces for various Maclean-Hunter publications. When Nick joined the CBC, Irene took great pleasure in telling friends about his many accomplishments. When Nick wrote a book about his grandfather, Roscoe Fillmore, an old-time socialist and well known horticulturist, Irene pitched in and helped with the research. After Frank passed away in 1978, Irene demonstrated great skill in renovating and managing the seven-unit apartment building they owned together on Queen Street in Halifax. After retiring, Irene moved to Embassy Towers, where she made new friends. She is survived by her son Nick and many nieces and nephews.  A private family memorial is planned. Donations in Irene¹s name can be made to Bide Awhile Animal Shelter in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.  Arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
