Obituary
Robert (Bob) Atkinson
(June 9, 1921 - April 25, 2011)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of G. Robert (Bob) Atkinson, 89, Fort Lawrence, on Monday, April 25, 2011 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre in Upper Nappan, with his family by his side. Born in Wentworth, NS he was the son of the late Alton and Edith (Goodwin) Atkinson. Bob was a well known dairy farmer, taking over and continuing to farm the Atkinson lands which they have occupied since 1774. He was actively involved in numerous farming organizations during his career. In his later years, Bob worked for Maritime Sod Farm Ltd. An avid gardener, his family appreciated the many vegetables and fruits he provided over the years. Bob was a member of the Fort Lawrence United Church providing leadership and was instrumental in integrating its congregation to Trinity St. Stephen’s United Church. Bob’s church service continued on the Property and Trustee committees. Bob was the custodian and manager of the Fort Lawrence Cemetery Trust. He derived great pleasure while singing with the Amherst Barbershop Chorus and quartet. In his younger years Bob and his lifetime friends entertained musically at community dances and later on passed the time by playing his many fiddles as well as listening to his old time music. His love of music and the ability to play brought him much comfort following the tragic death of the love of his life Kathleen. The family history was kept alive by his great story telling. Everyone who knew him benefited from his knowledge. A true mentor, he imparted his wisdom and life learned skills on to his beloved grandchildren which will never be forgotten. Bob will be lovingly remembered by his son, Clayton (Shirley) Atkinson, Truro, NS; daughter, Edith (Barry) Helm, Fort Lawrence, NS; beloved grandchildren, Darah, Andrew, Janet, Robert, Richard, Justin and Kathleen; special friend, Rhoda Allen; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family. Besides his parents, Bob was predeceased by his wife the former, Kathleen Elaine Trueman in 1985; and sister, Gladys Trenholm. His remains are resting in Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (667-9906) with visiting on Thursday, April 28, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be celebrated on Friday at 2:00 p.m. from Campbell’s Chapel, with Rev. Marion Lloy officiating. Reception to follow. Interment will take place in the Fort Lawrence Cemetery. Donations in Bob’s memory may be sent to the Cumberland County Hospice/Palliative Care Society or charity of your choice. The family would like to acknowledge and thank White Birches, Northumberland Hall and Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre medical unit for the wonderful care provided to our dad.
