HOWLAND - Dorothy A. (Schurman) Carrell went home to be with our Lord and Savior Oct. 17, 2009, in Howland. She was born Sept. 17, 1923, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, daughter of Robert and Ella Schurman. She graduated from nursing school at Toronto General Hospital in 1948, attended New Brunswick Bible Institute graduating in 1953 and then went to Nigeria, Africa, under the Sudan Interior Mission as a nurse/missionary. While attending Bible school she met and fell in love with Wilbur J. Carrell "Joe." They were married Feb. 9, 1956, in Egbe, Kabba Province of Nigeria, Africa. Returning home to the states in 1958, she used her nursing skills as a registered nurse at the veterans' hospital in Augusta, and later at Thayer Hospital, Waterville, then retired from Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor. She is survived by two sons, John R. and Timothy G. Carrell and their wives, Diane and Sally; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A committal service for family and friends will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Gould's Ridge Cemetery, Passadumkeag. Arrangements with Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln.
