PORTSMOUTH - Philip H. Smart, 85, widower of Lucy Belle (Oulton) Smart, of 133 Lincoln Ave., died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
He was born in Portsmouth, Nov. 7, 1916, the son of Harvey and Edna (Tucker) Smart. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1934.
Mr. Smart served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was employed for 33 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring as Nuclear Propulsion Supply Supervisor in 1973.
Mr. Smart was a life long member of the Unitarian Universalist Church (South Church) of Portsmouth and formerly served on the Board of Wardens.
He was a member of the National American Legion and was an active supporter of the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas P. Smart of West Hartford, Conn., and Major Peter H. Smart, United States Army, and his wife, Alexandra of Huntsville, Ala.; grandson, Nicholas Smart and granddaughter, Phoebe Smart, both of Huntsville; a brother, Robert Smart of Annandale, Va.; stepbrother, Roger Tucker of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth, Saturday at 11 a.m. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
