OPTOMETRIST FOR 42 YEARS
HUDSON - Donald J. Byrne, 77, of 7 Oregon Ave., Old Orchard Beach Maine, and Myrtle Beach, S.C., formerly of Hudson, a doctor of optometry, died yesterday at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine, after a long illness.
He leaves his wife of 49 years, Edith M. (Oulton) Byrne; three sons, James Byrne of Strong, Maine, Paul Byrne of Hudson and Thomas Byrne of Greene, Maine; five daughters, Ellen Poirier of Marlboro, Janet Byrne-Weiss of Wynnewood, Pa., Susan Hollick of Columbia, Tenn., Mary Byrne of LaVergne, Tenn., and Ann Orth of Supply, N.C.; a sister, Margaret Bigelow of Bethel, Vt.; and 13 grandchildren. He was born in Marlboro, son of Martin J. and Anna G. (Byrne) Byrne, and lived most of his life in the Hudson and Marlboro area before retiring. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II.
Mr. Byrne was a prominent optometrist in Hudson for 42 years before retiring in 1992. He was a past exalted ruler of the Hudson Lodge of Elks and a member of the American Legion.
The funeral will be held Saturday from Merrill-Carleton Funeral Home, 1 Pleasant St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Church, 21 Manning St. Cremation will follow. A calling period will be held from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Please omit flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to Pine Tree Camp, PO Box 518, Bath, ME 04330.
