Barnum, Joan D.
Joan D. Barnum, born November 4, 1924 in Lowell, MA to Sabra Oulton Dursthoff and Dr. Leonard C. Dursthoff of Chelmsford, MA. She was educated in Chelmsford schools and graduated from Rogers Hall in Lowell and then in 1946 from Wellesley College.
She moved to Boston and started in publishing in various capacities as Editorial Assistant for D.C. Heath, a textbook company, then as Assistant Fashion & Beauty Editor for the Boston Herald-Traveler writing daily columns on beauty tips and feature articles for the women's pages. She also worked for McGraw-Hill and making educational film strips for schools. She continued her work through the Flynn Gallery at the Greenwich Library where she wrote reviews and publicity articles.
She lived in Riverside from 1950 until moving to Edgehill Retirement Community in 2003. She was very socially active in Riverside and a long time member of The Riverside Yacht Club out of which she and her husband Bob sailed for many years. She was an avid reader, a gracious and engaging hostess over the years she lived in Riverside, co-captained with her husband as they cruised the coast together and with friends, loved to travel abroad, and was an active member of the Greenwich Junior League and the Wellesley Club of Fairfield County.
She is survived by her loving family - her husband Bob, of Stamford, her brother Leonard Dursthoff of Laguna Woods, CA, sons Will Morrison (Leslee) of Old Greenwich, Rob Morrison (Linda) of Falmouth, ME, her step-children Clint Barnum of Springfield, VT, Chuck Barnum of Palm Beach, FL, Lynne Wilkens (Bert) of Putney, VT, and David Barnum (Donnel) of Townshend, VT, and numerous devoted grandchildren and their spouses and children.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, March 21 at The First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA or to the First Congregational Church.
