      Donald Garfield Stymiest
      August 20, 1924 - September 16, 2009
After a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s, Donald died peacefully in the Veteran’s Wing at Sunnybrook Hospital where he has received exceptional care for the last seven years. Don is survived by his wife of 59 years, Margaret, and his four children, Carol (Greg Gustafson), Barbara (Jamie Kidd), John (Cyndie) and Ruth (Stan Rustscheff), and his nine grandchildren, Lindsay, Michael, Barbara, Christopher, Brittany, Stefan, Christina, Nikki, and Siobhan. Survived also by his sister Winifred Stuart. Don was born and raised in Loggieville, New Brunswick. He enlisted in the armed forces in 1940 and shipped overseas with the Carlton and York Regiment. Don fought in North Africa, Italy, France, Germany and was part of the liberation of Holland. After the war he settled in Toronto and met and married his “best friend” Margaret. Don’s graduation from UofT was followed by a long career in the graphic arts, where he was recognized as an industry leader. He lived the mantra of “to thy own self be true” and will be remembered forever for his love of family, golf and ice cream. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME – A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 7:00 to 9:00 on Friday, September 18. A celebration of his life will be held in the chapel at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 19. If desired, and in lieu of flowers, donations in Donald’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society for Metropolitan Toronto, 20 Eglinton Avenue West, Suite 1200, Toronto M4R 1K8. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
