      Mary Brown
      Born: January 4th, 1916 Passed on: October 30th, 2007
Mary K. Brown Amherst - It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 of Mary Katherine Brown. Born January 4,1916. Born in River Hebert, she was the daughter of the late William and Jane (Brine) Melanson. She was also predeceased by her loving husband Tom, and brothers Ralph Melanson, Fred Melanson, Robert (Bob) Melanson and sisters in law Doris (Bishop) Melanson, Irene (Terrio) Melanson, Nora (Fife) Melanson and Alice (LeBlanc) Melanson. She is survived by her sisters Anne Melanson, Stella Doiron (Russell), brother Leon Melanson all from Amherst and brother Allen (Toni) Melanson of Halifax and step daughter Barb Letcher (Amherst) as well as many nieces and nephews who will all deeply miss her. She lived in River Hebert from 1916 - 1945 when the family moved to West Amherst which she called home until 1959 when she married the love of her life Tom. They called Wellington Street home until his death in 1965. After that she shared her home with her treasured sister Anne where they welcomed friends and family to drop by often. Mary especially enjoyed frequent visits from her cherished niece Gail Bourgeois. She also enjoyed quilting, knitting and playing a good game of cards and spending time at the shore. She was a devoted member of the Holy Family Parish, member of the Catholic Women's League (CWL) for 49 years and a Past President. She received the CWL Maple Leaf Award, which is the highest honor given. She was also one of first Eucharistic Ministers, serving from 1970 until recently. Mary also served as a volunteer on the Board of Commissioners for the Housing Authority for five years. She graduated from St. Charles Commercial in 1943 and went to work at Canada Car for a short time before starting her loyal stay at the Amherst Daily News where she worked for 38 years, retiring in 1982 as their office manager. She thoroughly enjoyed her retirement when she could spend more time with her cherished family and friends. She was always making something to feed the welcomed visitors who dropped by and was most famous for her fudge and donuts. But her legacy will be her positive and inspirational attitude in life - always seeing the sunshine in everyone and everyday. Visiting was at Furlong-Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church Street Amherst on Thursday, November 1, from 2 - 4 and 7-9,with prayers at 8:30 pm. Funeral mass was held at Holy Family Parish at the St. Charles site on Friday, November 2, 2007 at 2:00 pm, with Father Vernon Driscoll officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery immediately followed the funeral mass as well as a reception in the church hall. Donations may be made in her memory to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Saint Charles-Nativity Cemetery or a charity of your choice. www.jonesfuneralhome.ca
