RIVER HEBERT – We are sad to announce the death of Clair Wilfred Melanson (Pooch), 87, of River Hebert, NS. After a lengthy stay at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst, NS, Clair passed away peacefully on September 2, 2011.
Born in River Hebert, NS, on April 23, 1924, he was the son of the late Leo and Beatrice (Como) Melanson.
Clair was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He spent his early years working as a truck driver for Albert Arseneau and at various coal mines in the area before going to work at the Cochrane Mine, which later became the River Hebert Coal Company, where he worked underground, on the bank-head and then as a hoist operator. He was employed there until the mine officially closed, 1980. He was one of the first members of the River Hebert Volunteer Fire Department and member of the Holy Name, St. Paul The Apostle Roman Catholic Church, River Hebert. He thoroughly enjoyed listening to and playing music with his friends, as well as a good game of Auction 45s, and cherished his time with his wife, family and extended family.
He was pre-deceased by his wife Marion (Richard), son Roddie, sisters Eileen and Helen, and brothers Ivan, Eugene and Basil.
He is survived by his children Billy, (Patsy), Kamloops; Reggie (Irene), Amherst; Peter (Theresa), Maccan; Johnny (Trudy), Advocate Harbour; Theresa (Junior), Moncton; and Albertine, Moncton. He is also survived by brothers Dara and Jude and a sister Lorraine. He will be greatly missed by 14 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
His remains are resting at Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, Main St., River Hebert, NS, (902)251-2877. Visitation will take place on Monday, September 5, 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will take place on Tuesday, September 6, 11:00 a.m. at the Saint Paul The Apostle Roman Catholic Church, River Hebert. Father David MacDonald officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Dennis Cemetery, Minudie.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Jozef Zaremba and all of the nurses and staff at the CRHCC for their support and compassion throughout his stay.
