Curtis Emmerson Mercer
November 24, 1932 – August 27, 2013
MERCER, Curtis Emmerson-80 of Cole Harbour, passed away August 27th, 2013 at the Dartmouth General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sussex, NB, he was the son of the late James E. and Vera M (Snyder) Mercer.
Curtis was in the Navy for 22 years and retired as a Petty Officer 1st class. Following retirement from the regular force, he served in the Reserves for several years. He later worked at the Kings County Correctional Centre as an admitting officer. He enjoyed square dancing with his wife Patricia for over 35 years. Together, they were members of many square dancing clubs. He was a huge Montreal Canadiens fan and was the statistician for the NS Voyageurs for many years. He also loved spending time reading the newspaper and western books. He treasured time spent during the winters in Florida and loved weekly card games with Susan and Gary Lucas.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Patricia “Pat”; daughters, Susan Vandertuin, Woodville, Terry (Larry) Slaunwhite, Cole Harbour; sons, Steven (Christiane) Orangeville, Ont, Paul (Cheryl), Alton; grandchildren, Patricia, Samantha, Christopher, Phillip, Trevor, Courtney (Jesse), Stephen (Melanie), J.D. (Jessica) and Travis and six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He will also be dearly missed by Mindy and Ben.
Curtis was predeceased by brothers, Harold and Jack; sisters, Shirley, and Rowena and Carol in infancy.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life visitation will be held in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth on Thursday August 29th from 7-9 pm in the Family Reception Lounge. Private family interment to take place on Friday August 30th at 11am at Dartmouth Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA.
