    • Obituary

      SOUTH PORTLAND - Melissa V. Perkins, 74, of 98 Summit St., a widely known hortaculturalist [sic], died Tuesday in a Portland hospital.

      She was born in Portland, a daughter of Watson E. and Annis Small Tingley. She attended local schools and graduated from South Portalnd High School in 1929.

      Mrs. Perkins was a substitute teacher who taught horticulture at the Univ. of Maine at Portland and Yerxa's for 10 years, where she was known as "The Green Thumb Lady." She retired in 1974.

      She lectured at local garden club meetings, was treasurer of the Main Rose Society and was a former member of the Maine Bee Keepers Association.

      Surviving are her husband, Charles A. Perkins, a priminent [sic] member of the Maine Rose Society and a prize-winning rose grower; a a daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Hazel) Estey of South Portland; four sisters, Mrs. Edward (Susie) McCann, Mrs. Philip (Lunetta) Herman and Mrs. John (Emily) Wilder of Massachusetts; three brothers, George Tingley of Vassalboro, and John and Philip Tingley, both of California; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

      A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd. Burial will be in Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland.
