    ROBERTS, Percy James - 43, Petawawa, Ont., formerly of Canso, died April 27, 1993, as the result of a motor vehicle accident in Central West River, Pictou County. Born in Canso, he was a son of James and Jewel (Swaine) Roberts, Canso. He was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces for 25 years, retiring in 1991. He was currently employed in Petawawa. He is survived by his wife, Lois; son, James Douglas, at home; stepdaughter, Tonya, Petawawa; seven sisters, Linda White, California; Shirley Ehler, Whitehead, Guysborough County; Winifred Bent, Paula Richard, both of Canso; Margaret Feltmate, Kempt Road, Richmond County; Susan Hendsbee, Dartmouth; Julia Bain, Eastern Passage. He was predeceased by a sister, Hilda Mae Bland. A memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. today in St. James United Church, Antigonish. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Malcolm and Deavitt Funeral Home Chapel, 141 Renfrew St., Pembroke, Ont. Cremation to follow. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to any charity.

    The death of Mrs. Walter Swaine took place on Tuesday morning in St. Martha's hospital, Antigonish, after an illness of several months. She is survived by her husband and eleven children as well as a number of brothers and sisters, some of whom were here for the funeral, which took place on Saturday, in the Canso cemetery, Rev. W. H. Johnson, pastor of the Canso Baptist Church, officiating.

    Rupert Swaine, Canso - The oldest and one of the most respected citizens of Canso, Robert [sic] Swaine, passed on December 30 at the ripe old age of 93 years. Mr. Swaine was born in Canso, and followed his trade as a carpenter. He enjoyed good health until a couple of years ago. The past few years, he and Mrs. Swaine made their homes with their children, first with their daughter Cora (Mrs. Charles Kavanaugh) and within the past year or so with their son Fred and Mrs. Swaine, who tenderly cared for him in his illness. The deceased leaves to mourn for him his widow; three sons, Walter and Fred, Fishery Officer, both at Canso, Clarence, Western Canada; two daughters, Cora (Mrs. Charles Kavanaugh), Montreal, and Annie Laurie, teacher at Vancouver. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. W. H. Johnson at the residence of his son.

    CANSO'S OLDEST RESIDENT IS DEAD - The death of Canso's oldest resident and a very respected citizen, RUPERT SWAINE, occured at the home of his son FRED, fisheries inspector for Canso District. The late Mr. Swaine, who had reached the advanced age of 92 years last June, followed the carpenter trade during his working years but had been in failing health recently. He is survived by his wife, three sons, FRED, fisheries officer, Canso; with whom the aged couple resided during recent years; WALTER, a carpenter, also of Canso; and CLARENCE in Western Canada; and two daughters, MRS. CHARLIE KAVANAGH, Montreal and ANNIE LAURIE, teacher, Vancouver, B.C. The funeral was conducted by the Rev.W.H. Johnson, Pastor of the Canso Baptist Church.
