    News Article

November 1957 - Woman Dies When Fire Razes Home - New Glasgow - Mrs. Harlan Robertson of Barney's River lost her life late Thursday when the family home was burned to the ground in a fire of unknown origin. She was at home with her husband, son Everett and daughter-in-law at the time of the fire. The other three members of the family escaped, and attempts made by Everett to get back into the house and upstairs to save his mother were unsuccessful. He received burns in the attempt. Mrs. Robertson, 65, was the former Margaret Bannerman and had lived at Barney's River all her life. Volunteers from the community who rallied quickly were able to keep the flames from spreading to the garage and other out-buildings. Mrs. Robertson is survived by her husband and nine children. Her sons are Lawrence in New Glasgow, Everett and Lester in Barney's River, Donald and Fred in Toronto, and Allison in Halifax. The daughters are Mrs. Chris Ritchie and Janet in New Glasgow, Lena (Mrs. Wendell Watters), Montreal. A fourth daughter, Emma (Mrs. Dan Robertson) of Barney's River, predeceased her several years ago. Dr. C. Harries, coroner, conducted a preliminary inquest late yesterday afternoon, at the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow, to investigate the death of Mrs. Robertson. Dr. Park, pathologist at the Aberdeen Hospital, identified the body as that of a female, and Dr. Harries adjourned the inquest until Nov. 23, when witnesses will be called. RCMP conducted the investigations and said that Mrs. Robertson's body was found in the cellar of the home at Barney's River.
