    News Article

November 1957 - Woman Dies When Fire Razes Home - New Glasgow - Mrs. Harlan Robertson of Barney's River lost her life late Thursday when the family home was burned to the ground in a fire of unknown origin. She was at home with her husband, son Everett and daughter-in-law at the time of the fire. The other three members of the family escaped, and attempts made by Everett to get back into the house and upstairs to save his mother were unsuccessful. He received burns in the attempt. Mrs. Robertson, 65, was the former Margaret Bannerman and had lived at Barney's River all her life. Volunteers from the community who rallied quickly were able to keep the flames from spreading to the garage and other out-buildings. Mrs. Robertson is survived by her husband and nine children. Her sons are Lawrence in New Glasgow, Everett and Lester in Barney's River, Donald and Fred in Toronto, and Allison in Halifax. The daughters are Mrs. Chris Ritchie and Janet in New Glasgow, Lena (Mrs. Wendell Watters), Montreal. A fourth daughter, Emma (Mrs. Dan Robertson) of Barney's River, predeceased her several years ago. Dr. C. Harries, coroner, conducted a preliminary inquest late yesterday afternoon, at the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow, to investigate the death of Mrs. Robertson. Dr. Park, pathologist at the Aberdeen Hospital, identified the body as that of a female, and Dr. Harries adjourned the inquest until Nov. 23, when witnesses will be called. RCMP conducted the investigations and said that Mrs. Robertson's body was found in the cellar of the home at Barney's River.

    Obituary

John Robertson - Barney's River Station, Dec 1, 1931 - The death occurred on Wednesday, November 25th of John Robertson, at the home of his son, Stewart. The passing of Mr. Robertson marks that of the oldest resident of Barney's River Station, and one of the oldest residents of Pictou County. Mr. Robertson was a man of fine Christian character. He clung to the old Presbyterian faith of his fathers, and was ever ready to help in a good cause. Although having attained the age of ninety-two years, Mr. Robertson retained his faculties until his passing. He was married twice, both wives having pre-deceased him. He leaves to mourn, two daughters, (Martha) Mrs. J.A. Pentz, Portland, Maine; (Emma) Mrs. J.J. O'Brien, Toronto, Ontario, Three sons, James and Harlan residing at Barney's River and Stewart on the old homestead. Two sons predeceased him: Charles at Trenton, in 1926 and William in Colorado, in 1929.

There was a Donald Robertson who died 11 Feb 1871 in Barney's River, NS (Pictou Co Death records and 1871 census) but this is not the correct Donald. This Donald is listed as a widower. From Marsha MacKay on 20 Mar 2003:

#788 on your list, is not Hannah Oulton's husband Donald Robertson. We don't know
what ever happened to him, other than rumour has it he left his family, and headed for the States, and died down there, Gawd knows when or where. The Donald Robertson mentioned in the death register, 1871 Census is a widower, and I have to admit, he's one of the Donald Robertson's I haven't figured out yet. There were "MANY" Donald Robertsons even in that small area of Pictou County. Hannah was still living in 1871.

Donald married Hannah Oulton 4 Mar 1834, Barney's River, Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada. Hannah (daughter of Charles Oulton and Elizabeth Lewis) was born 1812; died 1886; was buried 1886, Hattie Cemetery, Avondale, , Nova Scotia, Canada. [Group Sheet]
