    Fred Melanson AMHERST, NS - Fred Melanson, age 89, of Amherst, passed away Thursday, February 15, 2007 at the All Saints Hospital in Springhill. Born in River Hebert he was a son of the late William and Jane (Brine) Melanson. Fred was an accomplished gardener, well known for his beautiful property, and enjoyed inventing practical solutions to everyday challenges. He contributed greatly to the restoration of the St. Dennis Church, Minudie. He will be sadly missed by three sons, Warren (Anne Matheson), Halifax, Arnold (Eleanor), Truro, and Gerald (Patricia Robertson), Halifax; four grandchildren, Andrea, Nadine, Sarah and Joseph; one great grandson, Nicholas; sisters, Mary, Anne, and Stella; Brothers, Leon and Allen. He was predeceased by his wife Irene Melanson less than three months ago, great granddaughter Jenica Saulnier, and brothers Ralph and Bob. Arrangements have been entrusted to Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst (667-8777). Visitation will take place at the Furlong~Jones Chapel on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Parish prayers will take place at the chapel Sunday night at 8 pm. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at the St. Charles site of Holy Family Parish, 63 Church St. on Monday at 10 am, Father Vernon Driscoll officiating. Burial will take place in the Saint Charles - Nativity Parish Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Restoration Committee of the St. Denis Church, Minudie. www.furlongjones.ca

    MELANSON, Irene - 92, Amherst, passed away in Gables Lodge in Amherst on Thursday, November 30, 2006. Born in Mill Creek, she was a daughter of the late Louis and Jennie (DesBarres) Terrio. Irene was a long term member of Nativity of Our Lady Parish, and Nativity of Our Lady Parish CWL; past president, she was a recipient of the Maple Leaf Service Pin. She was an amateur historian and genealogist who researched and compiled many families' histories. Irene was awarded the Canadian Heritage Award for the restoration of St. Denis' Church in Minudie. She will be sadly missed by her husband, Fred Melanson, West Amherst; sons, Warren (Anne Matheson), Halifax; Arnold (Eleanor), Truro, and Gerald (Patricia Robertson), Halifax; grandchildren, Andrea, Nadine, Sarah and Joseph; great-grandson, Nicholas; sister, Francis Legere, River Hebert; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her infant sister, Modeste; brothers, James, Ronald, Jude, and Joseph, and great-granddaughter, Jenica Saulnier. Arrangements have been entrusted to Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst (667-8777).
