    TINGLEY, Donald William - Died on Saturday, December 13, 2003, in Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst. He was born in Edgett's Landing, N.B., November 11, 1919, the only son of the late Willard "W.A." and Evelyn (Edgett) Tingley. Soon after his birth, his family moved to Amherst, where he resided his entire life, except during his army service. He was educated in the Amherst school system, and received business training at St. Charles Commercial School. Following graduation, he joined Tingley Monuments Ltd., and became the fourth generation operator of the family business. He was married to Margaret Trenholm for 56 years, until her death in 1997. In 1941, Don joined the Canadian Army and in 1943, he went overseas with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps (No. 9 Cdn. Gen. Hosp.), and remained with this unit until war's end, when he returned to Canada. For his service, he was awarded the British Empire Medal. Don returned to the family business where he remained until his retirement. Don was a valued member of the Amherst Kinsmen Club from 1949, and became Maritime Provinces District Governor in 1956. He served on the Kinsmen Springhill Disaster Dental Fund Committee set up to provide dental care for children of the Springhill Mine disaster victims. He was made a life member of the association in 1979. His interest in local politics began in 1957 when he was elected town councilor. He served as Mayor of Amherst from 1963-70. Don served several years as chairman of the Amherst and Area Industrial Commission and later as honorary member, until it was disbanded in 1999. He was presented with a Centennial Medal in 1967. He served several years on the Cumberland Development Commission. As Mayor, he served with the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities and became its president in 1968. He maintained his interest in politics and was an ardent member of the PC organization, serving as president for one term. For seven years, he served on the Advisory Board of the old Central Trust Company and its successors Central and Eastern Trust and Central Guaranty Trust Co. He was very active on the original Amherst Board of Trade and present Chamber of Commerce, to which he was named honorary life member in 1996. He became a Mason with Alexander Lodge No. 87 in 1959 and was elevated to Master of the Lodge in 1973. He maintained membership until his death. He was an active member of the Cumberland Lung Association acting as President from 1975-78. He became a member of the Amherst Rotary Club in 1986, working on many fundraising and fellowship committees, and remained an active member until his death. In February 2002 he was presented with the Distinguished Services Award. Don served on several Provincial Industrial Development boards from 1985 to 1993, including the Nova Scotia Resource Board, Nova Scotia Business Capital Corporation and Small Business Development Corporation. He was a long-time member of Canadian Legion No. 7, RCAF Association and the Amherst Township Historical Society. He was a long-time member of the Amherst Curling Club and the Amherst Golf Club. Don was an adherent of Trinity St. Stephen's United Church and the First Baptist Church. Don enjoyed travel, woodworking, cottage life, gardening, bridge and he very much loved and appreciated spending time with his family. Don leaves to mourn his wife, Adrienne (Kilpatrick) Baxter, whom he married in October, 1999, and sons, David (Nancy), Cole Harbour; Keith (Hazel), Amherst; daughter, Carol (Wayne) Kraushar, Mississauga; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; stepsons, Bruce Baxter and Peter (Tammy) Baxter; stepdaughter, Elizabeth (Baxter) McManaman, Amherst; six stepgrandchildren; sisters, Margaret (Ken) Fage, Amherst; Neva Ward, Kentville; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and his first wife, he was predeceased by his sister, Mildred Reilly. The family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 Friday, December 19, in Cumberland Memorial Chapel, 23 Prince Arthur St. His memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, December 20, in Trinity St. Stephens United Church, Amherst. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made at Furlong's Funeral Home in Amherst (902-667-8777) to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Cumberland Regional Health Care Foundation or a charity of choice.
