    Donald Ross Smith, P.Eng.

    (1950-2007)

    CALGARY - Donald Ross Smith, P.Eng. (1950-2007) of Calgary passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2007 at the Rockyview General Hospital, Calgary after a lengthy battle with cancer.

    Born in Amherst, he was a son of Evelyn (Wood) Smith of Amherst and the late R. Layton Smith.

    Donald graduated from Pugwash District High School, Dalhousie University, and from the Nova Scotia Technical College in 1972, with a Bachelor of Engineering degree, with Distinction. Donald spent 3 years with The Enterprise Foundry Co. Ltd. in Sackville, N.B. before moving to Truro in 1975 to join Polymer International (NS) Ltd., which later became Intertape Polymer Group., and Engineered Coated Products. During the 25 years Donald spent in Truro with this company, he held a variety of positions in Production, Engineering , and R&D, and made many contributions toward the growth and success of the operation. In 2000, Donald moved to Calgary to assume the position of Techincal Support Engineer, in which he worked with customers, outside suppliers and the various territory managers in both the Western provinces and states. This position gave him the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the region, and on several occasions, to visit China, Korea, and Viet Nam to meet with potential suppliers. Besides items related to his career, Don was also interested in sports, music, reading, agriculture, and woodworking.

    Besides his mother, he is survived by a son Robert of Calgary, a daughter Stephanie (Kenny Ford) of Las Vegas, and their mother Brenda Tufts of Shubenacadie, N.S; his brother, Weldon (Jill) of Tidnish, a nephew Brett; and uncle Wyman Wood of Linden, aunts Audrey (Harold) Wood of Oxford and Mazel (Harold) Crossman of Bedford; and several cousins.

    Visitation will be held at Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (667-9906) on Wednesday from 7-9 p.m.Funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 16, 2007 at 2 p.m. from Campbell's Chapel with Rev. Susan Estabrooks and Rev. Steven Longmoore officiating. Interment will take place in the Hillside Cemetery, Linden.

    Donations in Donald's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.

    LINDEN - R. Layton Smith, 63, of Linden died Monday at home.  Born in Linden, he was a son of the late Ernest and Hattie Anna (Smith) Smith.  He was a lifelong resident of Linden and a member of Renwick United Church.  He is survived by his wife, the former Evelyn Wood; two sons, Donald, Stewiacke, and Weldon, Bridgewater; a sister, Ruby, Linden; two brothers, Evan, Kirkland Lake, Ont., and Rennie, Amherst; a granddaughter, three nieces and a nephew.  He was predeceased by a sister Pearl and two brothers, Leigh and Lawson, in infancy.  The body is in Mundel's Funeral Home, Pugwash, where the funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday, Rev. Ben L. Zinck officiating, assisted by Rev. Dewis Rector, with burial in Linden Cemetery.
