    Helen Viva Walton, of Baie Verte/Port Elgin, passed away peacefully at the Drew Nursing Home on Sunday, March 11, 2012, on her 101st birthday. Born in Port Elgin, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Leona (Allen) Field.

    In earlier years, Helen was a school teacher in Westmorland County, excelling in math instruction. She was a 50 year Jewel Holder and Life Member of Fort Monckton Chapter # 11, Order of The Eastern Star. Helen was also a Past Noble Grand of the Rebekah Lodge. She was a longtime member of the United Church of Canada, serving for many years as treasurer for the Port Elgin, Baie Verte, Tidnsh Bridge Pastoral Charge. Helen was involved with the Baie Verte Senior Citizens spending many happy hours at the Baie Verte Hall quilting with friends. " Quilters make better comforters". Helen was often called upon to write poetry for special occasions.

    Helen will be sadly missed by her two sons, Owen (Shirley), of Dartmouth, NS, and Thane (Doris), of Thunder Bay, ON; one daughter, Joyce (Ronald) Holden, of Windsor, ON; 14 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; brother, Roderick Johnson, of Port Elgin; sister, Isabel Peacock, of Bedford, NS, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

    She was predeceased by her husband, Floyd; daughter, Norma; one grandchild in infancy; brothers, Ernest, David and Douglas, and a sister Madeline.

    Arrangements have been entrusted to Jones Funeral and Cremation Services, 3 W Main Street, Port Elgin (538-2241), from where visitation will take place on Wednesday, from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Fort Monckton Chapter #11, Order of the Eastern Star will conduct a service at 7 PM. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at 2 PM from the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Fernwood Cemetery. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Helen may do so to The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls or a charity of your choice.     AGED CITIZEN OF PORT ELGIN PASSED AWAY
    Mr. David G. Field Died After Few Days' Illness at Advanced Age of 78

    After an illness of a few days -- although he had been in poor health for some months -- ther e passed away at his home in Port Elgin, N. B., one of the oldest residents of the village, D avid G. Field.

    The late Mr. Field was well known throughout the county having spent the greater part of hi s lifetime in Port Elgin. He was aged 78 years 5 months. Universal regret will be expresse d by the residents of the county, especially the older citizens.

    He leaves besides his wife, two sons, Doctor Burton R. Field, of Centreville, Carleton Co., a nd Ernest L. Field, of Bloomfield, Carleton Co., also one daughter, Lola M. at home. Three b rothers also survive, John, of Princeton, Maine; Samuel, of St. Andrews, and Job, of Shemogue , N.B. Also one sister, Mrs. Tingley, of Massachusetts. The funeral was held from the home , Friday afternoon at 2:30 to Fernwood Cemetary.

    OBITUARY

    Octogenarian of Port Elgin Passed Away
    Mrs. David G. Field Died Recently at Home of Her Son in Hampton, Aged 81
    Years.

    Mrs. David G. Field, lat of Port Elgin, N.B., died at the home of her
    son, Ernest L. Field, at Hampton on Feb. 9. Mrs. Field was born at
    Upper Cape, Westmorland County, 81 years ago and was the daughter of the
    late Squire Ephraim Rayworth. Mrs. Field's husband died three years
    ago. She leaves two sons, Dr. Burton R., of Centreville, and Ernest L.,
    of Hampton; also one daughter, Mrs. Ernest Reid, of Port Elgin. The
    late Mrs. Field was of English descent, her father being the first
    English child born in the parish of Botsford, Westmorland county. The
    late Ephraim Rayworth's home was well known for its hospitality, many of
    the leading citizens of the Maritimes Provinces having been entertained
    there. Mrs. Field will be remembered by her friends as a lady of
    culture and admirable qualities. The remains were taken to Port Elgin
    for burial, accompanied by her two sons, Dr. Burton R. Field, of
    Centreville, and Ernest L. Field, of Hampton. The funeral was held on
    Monday from the residence of the deceased's daughter, Mrs. Ernest Reid,
    of Port Elgin. Service was conducted by Rev. A.W. Teed, of Mt. Whatley,
    assisted by Rev. Mr. Chapman. Interment was in Fernwood cemetery.

    Samuel was hauling grain in from the field and while unlatching the gate by the corner of the old barn on his farm, he was gored by the horn of one of his oxen as it switched its head at an insect. He died from infection a few days later. His farm is now owned by Bernard Fields.
