ME, and stayed until about 1925 or so when he moved to Nashua, NH near his brother in law Earl D. He grew potatoes on his farm in Skowhegan, but after the market fell and daughter Ida died in 1924, he moved into town and sold fertilzer for a time (he had done it on the side at the farm), and may have done some carpentry work(?). He came to Nashua to Taylor St. near his brother in law Earl D. about 1925, when he offereed him a job at Osgood Construction Co., where he worked until his retirement in 1947. He worked as a finish carpenter with Earl, eventually doing estimates and design work for the firm. About 1947/8 he moved to Dover, NH to live with his daughter Anne A. and her family (Jesse M. Galt). In his youth in Canada he had gone out to the plains by train to work in the wheat harvests.

George courted Ella, Capt. Dixon Oulton's daughter in the same house that his father had courted Annie Gertrude Hicks- Dixon had bought the house from the Hick's.

He led the choir for many years in Jolicure, and also in the Methodist church in Skowhegan, ME. He continued in that role at Prides Corner. His mind was clear to the end of his life, and was hard working, taking great pride in work well done.

Edward had deep blue eyes, according to Annie Gifford Oulton.

I have photos taken in 1981 of the old home that collapsed near Oulton Corner in Jolicure, NB that was his home, and his parent's before him. It was out in the middle of a field and accessible by a narrow lane from the main highway. See the note at Annie Gertrude Hicks for a description of the house.

The farm was one half of his father's (Edward Samson Oulton) farm, with Busby Oulton owning the other half with the original buildings.

GA - Annie had dark eyes and hair- her eyes were a dark agate, according to Annie Gifford Oulton. She had beautiful small hands despite the hard work on the farm in Jolicure. Their house was small where they lived when first married, but Albert "was a good provider. There was wood for the stove and under the kitchen floor was a 'root cellar' where he had stored vegatables, turnips, potatoes, etc. and a barrel of pork. A ladder led to the root cellar with a trap door cut in the kitchen floor. Albert was working all the time on the outbuildings. Albert had built by himself the main house added to the ell by the time Mabel Durexa was born. The house was insulated with moss gathered from the edge of the marsh. Doubled lathed and plastered, it was a sturdy home with hand-made scroll work and a bay window where Annie kept many plants. They had a piano in one front room, and an organ in the other.

Annie and Albert took care of Annie's mother in her final days.

Annie suffered a stroke in 1928/29, and a broken arm during the summer of 1929, just before her husband Albert died. She stayed some of the time with her daughter Mabel.

She was related to Edward Hicks of Hinkley, ME who lived So. of Skowhegan opposite the bridge over the river. Mom (Anne O Galt) played with his children when her parents (George E. & Ella Oulton) vistied him.

NAME:Dixon Oulton - Oulton family Tree, by Gladys Trenholm PARN: BD: DD: WIF:(1st)

GA - Was most likely named for Charles Dixon, a shipwright in the Sackville District of Westmoreland Co., NB in the 1840's and 1850's. Charles Dixon was born about 1803 and had a wife named Sarah born about 1809. This info is from the 1851 census of Westmoreland Co., Sackville District, Page 29.

Charles Dixon Oulton was a sea Captain. Anne O Galt has his sea chest and their wedding license. Buried at Pt. de Bute/Jolicure NB near back half of cemetery on rt. Dixon lived with his family at his father's house in Jolicure, which later was owned by Pickard Oulton.

He was a Captain of a coastal steamer, and travelled up and down the New England and Atlantic Provices coastline. He met Caroline Malenfant in Boston where she was working.

    Notes:

AG - She lived in Skowhegan ME with George Edward Sr & Ella her daughter, and moved with them to Nashua NH, finally moving to CA to live with her son Thomas, his wife Nita and their two sons, where she died. Her remains/ashes were shipped back to Pt de Bute where they were interred with Dixon (near back half of cemetery on rt.).

She was a hatmaker by trade, and had a loom with which she made fabric and special cloth. When she was staying with Ella and George Edward Oulton in Nashua, NH in the 1920's, she had her loom in the front room of their house, and spent many hours at it. She also tended the grapes in their back yard.

Anne O Galt grew up calling her "Cookoo" instead of Caroline. She tells us she was quite deaf in her later years ("deaf as a bat"). Also, despite her French-Canadian background, she had only a slight accent. Only a few words belied a French accent with an emphasis on a different syllable or using different consonant sounds, etc. (eg: "garage" she pronounced "garash").

1851 census for Victoria Cty, NB has her father with his family living in the parish of St. Francis. (page 011 of the census for that county)

All children born in Van Buren , ME were baptised at St. Bruno's Parish, Van Buren, ME

FL- A question mark was placed by this name in computer record files of William Brown Oulton. Though these computer record files of 1978 vintage are in the files of William at Christina Lake;it seems unlikely that they were created by William as he has gone through them and corrected date etc and has signed his name to the same. They are predominately Oulton family records and show some of the children not listed in William Brown Oultons records however they are lacking dates, some of which have been filled in by William. Also the 1978 computer print out did not have a place of location there none of the information I have typed from this source has location with the exception of those added by William.
