    Notes:



    Joseph Purdy, son of Francis Purdy and Mary Brundage, was born about 1653 and died Oct 29 1709. His father died when he was five years of age and he was reared in the home of his stepfather, John Hoyt, in Rye, New York. He was prominent in Westchester County, New York, which he represented in the Colonial Legislature in 1693 and again from 1702 to 1709. He also served as Justice of the Peace and Supervisor of the town of Rye and in 1677 he was appointed surveyor by the Crown. He purchased from his father-in-law, Richard Ogden, his house and eight acres of land "on the highway that goeth to the mill." The house stood on a knoll just south of the road to Milton. The home was one of comfort and hospitality. In 1701 he bought lands in Northcastle, where some of his descendants settled. In 1697 he, with four others, was appointed "to see to building a house of worship, and the finding of a minister." He was devoted to the interests of the Episcopal Church until his death. His will was probated on Oct. 5?, 1709 and is in the New York Historical Society Collection. Married Elizabeth Ogden.

    The Purdy Family

    This family are the descendants of Francis Purdy, of Yorkshire, En., who removed to Fairfield, Conn., where he died in 1658, leaving two sons, Francis and Joseph, who were born in Yorkshire, and who held commissions from the Crown as surveyors. Francis Jar., left Joseph, the father of David, the father of David and Nathan Purdy, who settled in Newburgh prior to 1763, and whose descendants now reside in Ulster county. Joseph, the second son of Francis of Fairfield, married Elizabeth Ogden and had: 1. Samuel; 2. John; 3. Francis; 4. Daniel; 5. Joseph.
    (1) Samuel married Charlotte Strang and had: 1. Glorianna, married George Merritt, Sr.. (see sketch of Merritt Family Page 274); 2. Samuel, married Winifred Griffing and had Samuel, Henry, Jacob, Gabriel, and Lavina who married Capt. Eleazer Gidney; 3. Caleb, married Hannah Brown and had Caleb, Samuel, Josiah, Andrew, Nehemiah, Sylvanus, Elias, Caroline, Hannah, Lavina, and Anna; 4. Gabriel, married Bethia Miller and had James, Gabriel, Anthony, Glorianna, Lewis, Henry, and Bethia; 5. Charlotte, married Samuel Fowler, Sr. (see sketch of Fowler family Page 2??); 6. Henry, married Mary Foster, grand-daughter of Major Paulding, and had Elizabeth, William, Anna, Henry, and Samuel who was born at Yorktown, 1751, died at Newburgh, 1836, married Charlotte, daughter of Abel Flewwelling, and had Henry, Abigail, Elizabeth, Mary, Anna, Esther, Martha and Abel Guilford; 7. Elizabeth, married Josiah Fowler and had Glorianna, Gabriel, Esther, and Martha; 8. Josiah, married Charity Wetmore and had Seth, Alathea, Anna, and Esther.
    (2) John had three sons, Elisha, Joseph, and Nathaniel.
    (3) Francis had a son David, and three daughters, viz: Abigail, who married Nehemiah Fowler; Elizabeth, who married Arthur Smith; and Martha, who married Caleb Merritt. He died in Newburgh, June 2, 1760 aged 63 years.
    (4) David (? Daniel above?) had Isaiah, Nathan, David, Gilbert, Samuel, Josiah, Martha who married Daniel Denton, and Lavina who married Robert Denton.
    --- The Branches of this family are quite numerous in Westchester, as will be seen by reference to Bolton's history of that county.

NY" by Wm Pellatreau, there are the following mentioning Judith (a) Pg 387- "Francis Brown of Rye- Makes over to Joseph Horton Sr. all his lands, etc. and he is to furnish him a maintenance, and to pay ' John Ogden's children their legacies when they come to full age'. April 7, 1687. Joseph Horton Sr. makes over all the above lands to Judith, wife of Francis Brown, with same conditions. April 17, 1687. * Judith Brown was daughter of John Budd, and probably widow of John Ogden" (b) Pg 381- "John Budd of Rye- Gives to Judith Browne, 'the daughter of my honored father, and the heir of hers Joseph Ogden, a lot of land given by will of my father dated Oct 15, 1669, on the east side of Ould Westchester Path, and on Stony Brook..
