    Residence:
Steve Bryant determined which house they lived in from info given in the 1940 USA Census. He had visited them in that house quite a few times with his parents when he was a child. He said the house was horseshoe shaped, had a barn right behind it and a had a tower. This address fits the description and is also near Bow Road, which is where the census taker went next. Emma was still living in this house in 1970 and for a number of years afterwards. Someone in the town government knows the house and its current owners and has said that is the only house it could be. It is known as the Tower House in Northwood.

    Notes:

Discrepancy: The book, The Melansons of Nineteenth-Century Southeastern New Brunswick, by Michael B Melanson states on page 129 that Philippe Melanson, twin brother of Frederic and son of Pierre Melanson & Marguerite Melanson, is the husband of Apollonie Comeau. This Philippe was born 21 July 1852 and baptized at Minudie, Nova Scotia on 23 July 1852 along with his twin brother.

In the Marriage notice that appeared in Le Moniteur Acadien on Thursday, November 27, 1884, Philippe Melanson of Cap Pelé, New Brunswick weds in Joggins Mines on the 16th to Polonie Comeau of Barronsfield, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. The 1891 Census records for subdistrict of River Hebert, Cumberland, Nova Scotia, Canada shows that Philippe/Philip Melanson who married Apollonie (Polony or Polonie) Comeau was born in New Brunswick as well as his parents. His wife and her parents were born in Nova Scotia. In the 1901 census for Weymouth Bridge, Digby, Nova Scotia, Philip's birth date is given as 11th December 1853 and his place of birth is given as Cap Pelé, New Brunswick. This census indicates that his parents were also born in New Brunswick. Therefore, it is highly probable that the Philip Melanson who married Apollonie Comeau is Philippe s/o Joseph Melanson and Victoire Cormier and who was born and baptized in Cap Pelé on 11th December 1853. See him on page 79 of the Melanson book. In the 1881 census, this Philip is living in Botsford District, Westmorland, New Brunswick with his parents and brothers, Jude and Jacob, and he is a day labourer. His mother dies in February 1885 just a few months after Philip marries to Polonie. In the 1891 census for Botsford, Westmorland, New Brunswick, Philip's father is living with Philip's brother, Jude, and his family. Philip is no longer found in New Brunswick because he has married Polonie. In September 1906, an obituary published for Polonie refers to her as Mrs P J Melanson. It is possible that Polonie and Philip's second daughter, Mary Victoria, was named after her paternal grandmother, Victoria Cormier. Sometimes Philp is referred to as Philip J and other times as Philip G. The interchange of J with G may be the French pronunciation of the letter.- note by A. Owen, March 2014.
