    AMHERST - Edsel McLean Smith, 47, of 69 Hickman Street, died Saturday in the Highland View Regional Hospital.  Born in Shinimicas, he was a son of the late Guy W. and Carrie (Mills) Smith.  Owner and operator of the Smith Grocery Store on Hickman Street, he was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 10.  Surviving him are a son, Darryle, at home; two sisters, Dorothy (Mrs. Victor Aminsson) East Amherst; Mrs. Jen Carman, Waltham, Mass.; two brothers, Reginald, Waltham; Joseph, Marlborough, Mass.   Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, the former Betty Fields of Amherst.  The body is at Furlong's Funeral Home, where funeral service will take place Tuesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Malcolm Cogswell officiating.  Burial will be in Shinimicas.

    AMHERST - Mrs. Mary E. (Betty) Smith, 44, wife of Edsel M. Smith, of Amherst and formerly of Shinimicas, died Friday in the Halifax Infirmary.  Born in Amherst, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Fields.  Besides her husband, she is survived by one son, Darrlye, at home; one sister, Doris (Mrs. Victor Patterson), Bowmanville, Ont.; two brothers, Lewis, Oshawa, Ont.; Charles, Amherst; one half brother, Gordon Brown, Newcastle, Ont.  The body is at Furlong's Funeral Home, Amherst, where funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. H.G. Mackenzie officiating.  Burial will be in Shinimicas cemetery.
