    Obituary

    Dr. John Stewart Henry
    May 16, 1926 - May 13, 2013
Peacefully, with family at his side, at Beach Grove Home, Charlottetown, P.E.I. Dearly loved husband of Norah (DeBlois) for 57 years, and proud father of Andy (Carolyn), Susan (Steve), Peter (Deanne), Ian (Lin) and Jill (Andrew). Loving and loved granddad of Alastair and Niall, Thomas and Daniel, Michael and Katie, Jeremy and Noah. Survived by his sister, Anne (Hamish) Murdoch, and numerous nephews and nieces.
John was born in Montreal to Drs. Leila and Stewart Henry. He attended Rothesay Collegiate School and McGill University, obtaining an MD in 1949. He then studied placental pathology for a year in Boston before returning to Montreal to specialize in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Royal Victoria Hospital. In 1960, John was awarded a MacLaughlin Travelling Fellowship to advance the study of foetal heart monitoring with the eminent Dr. Bobby Caldeyro-Barcia at the School of Medicine of Montevideo, Uruguay. In addition to his obstetrical practice, John lectured at McGill Medical School, conducted research in placental physiology, and was a pioneer in the use of amniocentesis in Canada.
Norah was studying nursing when they met in 1954. They married in 1955, and in the following ten years they became the happy, busy parents of five children. The Henry family enjoyed winter weekends at his parents' home, Burkinbrae, in the Laurentians, and summers at the family cottage in Keppoch, P.E.I.
In 1969, John was invited to relocate to Charlottetown to fill a need for an OB/Gyn. There he joined the Polyclinic and practiced until his retirement in 1991.
Once his medical days were behind him, John could spend more time on his hobbies. A gifted artist, he worked in many media, watercolour being a favourite. His vegetable and flower gardens received great care and attention, and a familiar sight was John happily tending his beds while CBC radio kept him company. "Whistle while you work" was more than just an expression in John's case. He will be loved and remembered as K.O.D.J. (Kindly Old Dr. John) by his friends, colleagues, and hundreds of former patients.
We are eternally grateful for the loving care provided by the "Beach Grove Angels," and we will carry John's happy whistling in our hearts forever.
Funeral and interment took place in Charlottetown on Thursday, May 16, 2013. If so desired, memorials to Pat and The Elephant (www.patandtheelephant.org) or St. Paul's Anglican Church (www.stpaulschurch.ca) would be appreciated. Arrangements were entrusted to MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel. www.macleanfh.com
